1831 British Farthing http://www3.nf.sympatico.ca/donna.penney/coins/1831Farthing.jpg 1968 Mexican Silver 25 Pesos http://www3.nf.sympatico.ca/donna.penney/coins/1968_25Pesos.jpg I'm just wondering if that's a heart in the hand of the Incan "dancer".
I'm more of a "visual appeal" collector more then anything else, and while I've always been fond of the snake and eagle on Mexican coins, I just couldn't pass up the Aztec dancer... plus it was a silver coin... lol. As for the farthing, I'll buy ANYTHING I can afford with Britannia on it.
it's Aztec dancer and the heart comment would apply to them, not Incas. can you get a zoom pic of the snakes tongue? -steve
25 Pesos (Silver) : 1968 OBVERSE: Eagle standing left on cactus, snake in beak, ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS 25 PESOS LEY 0.720 oM REVERSE: Athlete in Aztec dress left, holding ball, Olympic Rings below, JUEGOS DE LA XIX OLIMPIADA MEXICO 1968
My bad... I'm always getting my early Central American cultures mixed up. I'm sure I would have him Mayan at some point too. I'll try and get a better pic of the tongue over the weekend!
I hear ya! I wasn't even looking for anything like this at the time, but as soon as I saw it I had to have it. It's a very attractive coin in hand.
That is also what the Schön catalog says: a Mayan "handball" player, with a playing field in the background. Christian
I myself bought a 1968 25 Peso coin the other day. Yours appears to be in much better condition that mine. Nice. I'm a fan of the olympics, and feel a coin from a country commemorating the olympics in the year in which they hosted it is a fun bit of history to have. In the same sense than a dollar from 1912 (Titanic) or a Pfennig from 1939 (WWII) would be interesting to have.
some reference the reverse as being an Aztec, others a Mayan; both cultures played hand ball. Krause has it as an Aztec. here's a wiki on Mesoamerica ballgames - this is the fun part of numismatics for me - learning about new things. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_ballgame my guess would be Mayan. -steve
