i took my 6 yr old son to the Annapolis coin show on Sunday where we met up with my father. he was walking the floor picking up deals as he found them. i had a few things in mind to look for and set out about doing that. we sit down at the table of a dealer who knows my father from way back, 3 generations are looking at coins - i'm checking out a few world coins, my son some Mercury dimes, and my father is working up a lot of Canadian. think real hard on that for a minute - 3 generations at one table nose deep in coins, if only we had a picture. i bought a Denmark 10 ore in XF with a lamination problem, my son picked out 3 Mercury dimes, and who knows what my father bought. as my son and i were looking through the stack of Canadian coins from the lot, the dealer hands my son a Russian 1765 5 kopeks in decent condition. my son picks up the coin and than a loupe. this gets a laugh out of a few people - it's a rather large coin. i start to hand the coin back and the dealer says my son can keep it. i gave him a look and he smiled and told me it was fine. my son thanked him and shook his hand. at the last Annapolis show, we picked up a 1762 Peter III coin for a decent deal, but had i been looking to pickup this coin this time, i would have paid market value. my son has all the luck.
Kids and girls have a natural advantage. Like at a baseball game, who do you think gets player autographs - a pretty, shapely, young woman or an old grey beard like me?
I think it's great......3 generations at one table. Who says the American family is defunct? Great story !!!
I should considering how much money they have gotten from me through the years. The sad fact is I am just another fan to them.
Hello, The story is nice, it's things like that which may get you kid hooked on coin collecting. For the dealer, it was "investment"
my son is already hooked - has even sold a few of his coins for double the investment - he paid me the original cost of the coin and then use the profit to buy another coin. smart one this kid is - takes after my father who has been vest pocketing for over 45 years. -Steve
