Steve a coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Explain ultra rainbow toned coins selling for 10x the value of a normal issue. This is because of eye appeal and someones willingness to pay an exuberant amount for such a coin.

i'm glad to see Hobo understood my viewpoint. not all eBay referencing threads are bad, but simply pointing a finger and snickering is pointless.

which is the more educational approach?

i think you can see the difference and that's the point i'm trying to make. simply posting a link and a LOL is juvenile and shows no amount of knowledge of the coin.

I am not even saying I like them or read them. What I am saying is that if someone wants to post such a thread, why not? If no one else responds, maybe they will get the idea. If others respond, so be it. Why should that bother anyone?

I enjoy the 'ebay scam' threads, and 'sgs/abon' threads also. I think there should even be a 'sticky' thread mentioning SGS that shows up every time you look here. That way some of the hundreds of people who surf this forum may be spared some grief.

Most of the coins with unreasonable reserves or prices out of line go with no bids or go unsold...

And, taking the time to post every outrageous Ebay auction or fake or overgraded, cleaned, etc etc coin would require a team of full time Ebay police, in fact, very few get posted here when compared to whats out there.

In another thread I likened it to this: Call your cable company and ask for the programs you don't like to be pulled off the air, or, better yet, use your remote and just change the channel

I don't like cooking shows, car shows, fashion shows, soaps, sitcoms etc, and most of my TV is the History Channel and the Discovery type shows, but I don't complain to Cox about it

I agree with Hobo, his comments have some merit. I am not impressed with some of the e-bay bashing postings because some individuals within this forum have made highly inaccurate statements about some auctions and these posts really do not education.
When you have an e-bay posting asking questions about the coins in auctions concerning grade, counterfeit, etc those provide education to everyone, imho.
Those posts with comments such as “can you believe this rip off”, “e- bay rip off of the day “ usually provide nothing.

He absolutely has a right to his opinion and to express it. What i absolutely do not like is his conclusions - eBay threads that he does not like should be removed. How else can the mods control where "they want this forum to be in the long run". On top of that, it is the variety that I enjoy here and apparently most members agree with me.

Steve has some good points and I mentioned them in his last tirade. NOT ALL ebay posts are really legit. I'll agree with that.

    Now.

THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES in my opinion and I'm free to state that last time I checked.

Now here's my question. Ebay "police" are bad but a CoinTalk "cop" is good? Let me know when you start your own forum. I'll sign up.

Finally here's a few numbers. Just copied them so they should be pretty current.

    Some CoinTalk stats:

    Members: 14,020
    Threads: 32,470
    Posts: 355,704

Would someone please go through each and every one of them to determine the percentage of possible time wasted on "ebay threads". I would but I have to sleep at some point in the next few years.

It is perhaps worth mentioning and interesting to note that many of these individuals posting these eBay auctions are mostly individuals who have just joined the forum in the last year or so. Oh for the good old days when we discussed just coins.

I am not offended and I am not trying to offend you or anyone else. If I have offended you or anyone else I certainly apologized.
It is just my opinion that it appears that in the last year or so this trend concerning Ebay auctions has really taken off and more than once has gotten us side tracked. Personally I just don’t see a lot of the experience, respected collectors members of this forum starting these types of postings.

And the fix in censuring every post. Would you like to do that? Or would you even like to see it done? I do not like the modern coinage. Should we also eliminate that? Then where does it stop.

My point is - like what you want. Read what you want. Ignore what you want. No one is forcing you to like, read or ignore anything you heart desires. The only other cure is censuring and the cure is thousands of time worse than the disease. The OP wants "a place where a serious collector can ask serious question". I have no idea why he feels that doesn't exist, but the only impedance I know of to keeping it would be the cure (censureship) that he is asking to be implemented. The way to assure that "a place where a serious collector can ask serious question" continues is simply to learn to ignore the posts he does not like.

No trying to please everybody, otherwise you'd be a politician. Read what you like, ignore the others, works for me everytime.

I'm amazed that there are this many people posting on such an unworthy thread. And pardon my temerity but doesn't this forum promote these postings and steer us to them with the "See similar posts" feature at the end of the thread? I like the internet. I learn from it pro or con. I wouldn't have it any other way. Book's I love. They are the best resource. But I can't always get my hands on the one I want. Recently tried to purchase a book called Complete guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars. Lowest price was $300.00! But on the internet with some patience and luck I found a copy, used , for $47.95. Scooped it up and it is a top resource for me. It wouldn't be without the internet. But I digress. E-bay is fun (?) and you can learn from it good or bad. But don't try to limit what I can read and what I can post within reason. In America I get that freedom.

the internet doesn't exist solely within the United States of America. also, America is not a country or continent, so i have no idea where you are talking about.

many things have become overpriced because of the internet - just about anything that is collectible has seen the prices rise - from antique furniture to analogue synthesizers to 1980's cartoon action figures. the internet makes it easy to know what you have or think you have.

Many of these items might have been otherwise thrown away if people did not have a venue in which to sell them. An effect of this is increased awareness of many items, and in some cases increased prices from people who decide they want these things, or, without the internet, wouldn't have even tried to find such items in the first place.

    The dictionary defines "America" as:
But that might be Andorran, Tuvalun, or from some other country where I don't have the freedom to use it.
