@Clavdivs You may consider your coins to be inexpensive, but the
burglar/robber does not know that. He sees old coins in a fancy, good
looking cabinet and they automatically think that the coins are of great
value. Just be careful and not an injured party.

Great job! Looks good and seems very practical, holding 870 coins is awesome.

That's magnificent. The EID MAR drawer pulls are a great touch.

Why not just keep it in a metal Leuchtturm box with trays. (below). Its safer, more portable, and probably cheaper than a large wooden cabinet. Doesn't wood tone the coins and leave risk of tarnishing?

Part of collecting ancients is being freed from the same fears of modern collectors. Coins with an intact patina are protected by that patina.

Yes I really like those - they look good and the portability is pretty great. In my case the wife actually wanted some sort of table or bookshelf behind our couch... so it was an opportunity for me to build something that fit both of our needs.
There are lots of options out there.. this is just one.
**the 870 coin capacity is also awesome!

Those aluminum drawer cabinets are fine, but the homemade cabinet is more unique and appealing, I think. Dual purpose for family furniture? Sounds like a win-win.

For me, if I had a large collection, I would always go for a coin cabinet over other more practical or cost efficient options, purely because I find them beautiful things in themselves.

I love the sharp contrast of the bright red tray against the black finish.

Great thread! I've been contemplating building a custom coin storage cabinet and was curious as to how various types of wood and finishes would potentially adversely affect my coins. I was also considering embedding a small safe inside.

Going off topic a bit, I also want to make custom display cases; both horizontal and vertical.

Jeez, that would just fit my office and that's it, nothing else. That's huge!

    It's cool though.

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

I do. But after looking at all the photos here, I'm embarrassed to show mine becuase it's just my ex-Sock Drawer which now houses some of my coins and albums and OGPs. Hahahaha. Wow - there are really a fine bunch of creative and talented carpenters in CoinTalk!
