There's two things one must always remember. When it comes to the market, values as whole may well be dropping, but there can still be isolated sections of the market that are not, or, may even be doing the opposite.

The second is that if you are seeing values rising while everything else says values are dropping, it could perhaps be an indication that you are looking in the wrong places for data - as in looking at bad sources, sources with invalid or inaccurate data.

Example, realized prices found on ebay as compared to realized prices found at major auction houses. They are quite often vastly different, cheaper at the auction houses in other words. Or, realized prices found on ebay as compared to asking prices found at major dealer sites - they are also quite often vastly different, cheaper at the dealers in other words.

And then you can compare the trends found on the electronic dealer markets - which is the one source that always shows the real world trend at a glance - to any other venue.

I wish I could "like" this post multiple times. I have long believed that us old guys have priced this hobby out of new collectors reach. Even though I do now own my fair share of higher valued coins, I would be happy to see something of a market correction that would put coin collecting back in the reach of younger interested folks.

It's sort of a catch 22 isn't it? We have the resources to get those coins that eluded us in our youth. But the other thing is, for me anyway, when I was younger I could find the wheat pennies, fill spaces in that blue whitman, even find a mercury dime or the occasional Walking liberty half.

The younger generation discovered the state quarters, but the mint overplayed it in my opinion. I suppose the Lincoln memorials are collectible for the younger generation now, maybe the Jefferson memorial reverses, but there's more competing for their attention these days.

It is simply more difficult to start collecting these days. When a lot of us started we could find — in circulation — wheat cents, Indian cents, walking liberties, even Barbers — you know the drill.

Now, there’s clad coins and Lincolns made out of zinc. Not a lot to get excited about, IMHO.
