I am interested in buying a metal detector, does anyone here use them, and if so,what is a good one for finding coins and such? I'v searched various web-sites,but would feel more comfortable hearing it from the horses mouth, someone who actually uses one.
Try Whites Metal Detectors...I have used one and really like them--no I didn't find any coins but I may one day-- Speedy
All detectors can find coins, You just need to be in the right place. I used a Whites Quantum XT for a couple years and then on my way to a beach I heard this awful loud steady tone. It was my detector and I had left the batteries in. It would not shut off and I had to pull the battery cartridge out. It has not worked since that time. So I guess I'm telling you this so you may concider buying one that has a good warranty, or is cheap enough that you won't feel devistated if it breaks. I have not bought another one since, but I think I am about to. I really miss the hobby! I was very pleased with its performance and accuracy. It did not pay for itself even though I found tons of coins. The cost of batteries is to blame. All the fancy options give you a better idea of what's in the ground and help you decide to dig or not. Yes they really can distinguish between trash and treasure. If I were thinking of buying another one I would choose one that can be used in the water or on land. I forget which brand, But I know I read about it some time ago and they offer a lifetime warranty. Depth is not important unless you expect to be diggin for that rare cache buried 2 feet down. Most don't go very deep and they will find plenty of silver in the first few inches of topsoil. If you can afford the best get it but for a first timer I would only get a midrange detector until you get some experience. You will have plenty of stuff to dig no matter what you choose to buy. Happy hunting! Digger
I use a Whites, Spectrum the machine is about 12 years old and works as good as the day I bought it, The same machine basically sells today under a new name XL or something like that ,, Rick
i have a Bounty Hunter Metal Detector and it works very well when used to find coins with it i have found a 1858 flying Eagle Cent, 1940 Mercury Dime, and a couple of Silver Roosevelt Dimes. also many poeple that i have talked to have also fould a lot of nice coins using Bounty Hunter Metal Detectors
I would recommend White or Garrett. May cost a few bucks more but the new models not only tell you what you found, before you dig, it tells you how deep to dig! Enjoy yourself while out there!
