I'm a novice at coin collecting and have been buying coins most of my life for my son whom unexpectedly passed away a couple years ago. So, now that I am retired, I'm putting my collected coins together to see just what I have and possibly find something that is valuable. Anyway, I found this coin in my collection and it is a beautiful "1880 American Eagle" with a liberty head on the obverse but i noticed on the reverse there is the word "copy" and to my surprise, the coin is very magnetic. See photos. Is this coin worth anything. It does say "One Dollar" on the reverse. Does anyone out there have experience with this issue? Is this a counterfeit coin? Anyone?
Sadly, no. Those are usually made of some ferrous metal with a very thin silver layer. May be something fun to hand off to a youngster... But no there is no value in those.
Welcome to the neighborhood! Please accept my condolences for the loss of your son. I'm sure that no parent ever wishes to outlive their child. Yes, your coin is a reproduction, and the word "COPY" is required on all reproductions of US coins made in the US. This, however, is not always the case when counterfeit US coins are produced overseas. These counterfeit coins are intended dupe people into thinking that they are real. Many of them do come from China. Chris
And the piece is STILL in violation of the HPA because the would COPY is to be INCUSE and on this one it is raised.
