Hey all, just wondering if a 1979 S Proof Set for 10$ was a good buy. left the redbook at home. also, is $3.50/roll of wheaties a good buy? its all at an old antique shop run by two elderly ladies. i've purchased coins for a STEAL there before, (ie flying eagle penny for $3). Thanks
That price could be ok or outstanding. Check the "S" mint mark to see if it is a Type I or Type II, be sure to check each coin as there are proof sets with mixed MM types (I know, I have one). The price for the roll of wheats looks about average. Once you open it and look, you'll know better.
what do i look for in the mint mark? i dont know if i can use a loop (loupe?) to check this out. could i tell bare-eye? i appreciate it.
no, i have one. i just didnt know if i could bring it in and check out their coins with it. i still dont know what to look for in the mint marks. but thanks tho.
The '70 type II has a sharp clear mint mark. Type I looks like a blob. It's primarily the dollar that carries a lot of value.
ok thanks. i'll swing by tomorrow and check it out. one thing though; is this going to be an apparent distinction (the MM) or will this take the eyes of a professional?
It would help if you've seen it before. There should be pics all over the net if you google it. The fields in the "S" are flush with the fields of the coin on the type II. It's a blob "S" in a blob on the type I.
well, i went by and looked closer at the set. conclusion: Susan B. Anthony = somewhat blobby 's' Quarter = clear 's' Nickel = clear s dime = blobby penny = clear
