China - Pre-coinage currency, Jade cicada-shaped - c.a. 3000-2000 BC - Jade https://auction.catawiki.com/kavels...ency-jade-cicada-shaped-c-a-3000-2000-bc-jade
funnycoins, I've been a student & collector of Chinese jade for many years & can assure you jade cicada were never used as currency. I viewed the cicada posted on the catawiki website with an estimate of 260-290 euros (which failed to sell), see photo posted below. This cicada doesn't appear to be old & in all likelihood isn't even jade. Genuine ancient jade cicada are very rare & expensive. They were symbols of resurrection because of their evolution of transformation, & during the Han Dynasty were often placed in the mouths of the dead. Pictured below are photos of genuine cicada from the Han Dynasty 2,200-2,000 years old. Jade cicada are still being carved today & are popular with Chinese as lucky pendants & fondling pieces. Good quality carved jade cicada can be found on E bay for as little as $15.00 each. See photos below.
I agree with Al. I think that piece could be just about anything, and the age is uncertain as well. However, there are examples of what many call 'cicada money', though they are like the fish, bridges, bells, etc. and likely had nothing to do with money but were decorations. Here is an example I just found (not mine):
