I have an ancient Augustus coin that I'd like to give free to someone new to ancient coins, just to keep the embers glowing while you shop around and get your collection started. It's not a rare coin, it's not a valuable coin, but it's an ancient coin, it's a start, and hey - it's free. This coin I'm giving away came from Forum Ancient Coins, so you can trust its authenticity.

It's the only ancient coin I have, but it will never get paired with another ancient coin because I can't afford this hobby, so it's really kind of illogical to have it here. I read CoinTalk almost daily because I really enjoy seeing these coins and reading the stories behind the coins and especially the history surrounding them. I love all things ancient Rome, including its coins - I just can't buy them, and that's okay by me, too.

The only way I can think of to make it fair in choosing who gets the coin is to have some kind of "contest", so I'll do that by asking you to name your favorite Roman emperor and maybe a little bit about why he's a favorite. The "winner" will be the first one who happens to choose my own favorite emperor, and you'll just have to take my word for who that is. If you win it, I'll just need your mailing address, but I don't know how to do private messages here, so maybe a CoinTalk veteran can tell you how to do that.

Having said all that, here's the coin:

I collect coins, more modern, would love to have a roman coin.
Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus, Constantine the Great
Because he became the first Christian Roman emperor in history.
    272 AD - 337 AD

I did look part of that up, I did not know previous what years.

I don't currently have any ancients. I have thought about it for a long time though.

I'm going with Caligula as your favorite because of his very short reign of only 3 yrs 10 months.

@Autoturf No offense, but I find Constantine a very overrated emperor. That being said, his coinage are generally affordable and somewhat interesting.

@masterswimmer Caligula is a great choice. A very colorful emperor...

But if I had to guess a favorite emperor for @Numisnewbiest I'd have to say Septimius Severus

And if I'm right, please give the coin to @spirityoda . The man really needs an ancient coin to push him towards the dark side.

Sorry, I can't help @spirityoda cross over to the dark side on the heels of Septimius Severus or Caligula, but I do find them both very interesting.

I am ok with that. I do not know ancient coins. Give it to someone that really wants it.

This is very nice of you, @Numisnewbiest!

I'm going to take a gamble and say good ol' Vespasian is your favorite!

    Here's a pair of Vespy As's...

And if that's right, I'd love to have @Clavdivs receive this Augustus, as it would be his first Imperial of him... In his own month of August for goodness sakes!
    Also...

Well, that sure didn't take long - Vespasian honestly is my favorite Roman emperor! As you wish, all I need now is for @Clavdivs to get me his mailing address and I'll get the coin on its way, if he wants it.

Hello @Numisnewbiest ... I do not want to take your only ancient coin.

I do really like it and would love to own it but I would not feel right about it. I have a lot of low end coins - mostly late roman bronzes ..
You also seem to really love history and would like to pursue the hobby - especially if you are here daily reading all of these posts.

You say you can't afford the hobby - so I have a few options for you:

-I can send you a few LRBs .. not in great shape but you can add them to this coin and have a small collection. You could also start to collect the less expensive LRBs and get some enjoyment out of it. They are common but also very interesting.

-If you are intent on not owning any coins we could come to an agreed price for your Augustus coin. Just PM me and we can talk.

-You could choose someone else who has no coins and donate to them.

Anyway - I am great with any decision you make.

    Have a wonderful day..

    Clavdivs

Also - @Justin Lee - thanks for thinking of me!

I appreciate everything you said, but you aren't taking my only coin - I'm giving it a proper home, and I have no sense whatsoever of "loss" or anything like that. I'm not a collector...I'm a fan of ancient Rome...so the coin was an interesting thing to see, but it doesn't belong here.

I'd love for it to be where it really should be, especially if it's with someone just getting an ancient coin collection started. That's the takeaway for me, so really you'd be doing me a favor. Please PM me your address and let me get this coin where it belongs. :)

With so many emperors to choose from, I expected this to take at least a little while longer, but alas - the contest is over, and the coin is on the way to its rightful place with @Clavdivs, and that makes me happy!

That's really good of you to offer up a coin , especially a freebie to coin collectors .
I've gotten an interest in the ANCIENTS from this group . I only want a couple examples of gold - silver - copper - bronze for my collection of coins and currency .
The only emperor I knew of was Caesar Augustus before this group .
Naturally I would like to have it but someone else might want or need it more than me .
