Have you reacquired a coin before?

Who has had a coin come back to them. Were you happy to have it back?
Did you keep it the second time around?

I've had a few coins that I sold and then reacquired. Some were better experiences than others.

For example, this Lincoln Cent I was happy to win back at auction a few years back after having sold it. And I have kept it since that point.

On the other hand, this Morgan was not as successful. I originally sold it for a slight gain. Then I won it back for quite a bit less than I originally paid when someone put it up for auction with poor photos. I was never a huge fan of it, but I did think it was a decent coin. The second time around it proved difficult to sell (even with my discounted purchase price). After it being available for a while, I finally sold it for around break even.

So, my lesson learned (which many may say is a pretty obvious one) was not to buy back coins that I wasn’t originally big on. Even if the price is lower the second time around, it just isn’t worth it in most cases.

@lordmarcovan - your white elephant is a particularly good tale of this.

Here is a slightly different example. This one I liked (and was surprised that it didn’t receive a star). When I bought it back, I felt there would be plenty of interest in it if I were to resell (based on the growing prices I’m seeing for toners). However, it never drew the attention I thought it would (the sticker didn’t even help :p). In the end, I grouped it with another coin and sold it for a loss.

I have never re-bought a coin I sold. If I sold it, there was a reason for that. Either I upgraded it, I didn't like it, or I moved on from that set. I can't see any reason I'd ever repurchase a coin that I sold.

The exception would be, perhaps, if I was buying it for the sole purpose of flipping it. But I don't do that.

Yes, I've repurchased coins sold in the past, but not as often as I'd like. I suspect most of my customers feel I am too far away to present me with the repurchase opportunity.

Have you ever posted a photo on a forum and have someone make you an offer that is too good to refuse?

That has been the case with a few of my coins. I posted some of these just to share and then was surprised by an unexpected offer. My most fortunate case was one that came back for basically the same price as I had originally paid (lucky auction win). Some have not come back, but I would certainly consider them again (even at a higher price than my original cost; although likely lower than what I sold them for).

As I’m transitioning towards a @lordmarcovan style box of 20 collection, it’s actually not that unusual that I would repurchase something that was worthy of a spot but was sold to help bring in something else. The box of 20 is a fluid collection. So even if I sold something before, it could easily come back and work just as well in my collection as before.

The reselling angle has also been a reason for some of the coins that were reacquired. Sometimes a seller has a bad eBay photo of a coin I used to own and that gives me an advantage in the bidding (and eventual sale; although some have been much harder to sell the second time around).

@CircCam do you have a link?
I think I’ve seen a post about this, but I’d certainly love to read it again.

Yes. And I resold it for a profit... again.

If I post a coin on a forum, you can consider it as being held "in very strong hands." Generally, when I make a purchase, it is because it is either crucial to my set, or is in extremely nice condition for what I collect.

Usually, I pay a correspondingly nice price for it.

And almost always, I'm one of the strongest buyers for that sort of material.

So, no, I've never had anyone make an offer I couldn't refuse.

I'm focused on two sets right now - US type in Prooflike condition, and Moroccan coinage. I don't know anyone else collecting Moroccan coinage in the depth, breadth, and condition that I am. There are a few other people collecting US PL coinage.... but I'm still one of the strongest buyers out there.

I suppose if I were collecting something more commonly collected (toned Morgans, CBH, etc), I'd get more of those sorts of offers and my perspective might be different.

It has happened with me a couple of times. I once bought a nice original 1837 No Stars Seated half dime in an old small ANACS EF40 holder, only to discover later that it was one I'd bought and sold something like a decade earlier. Which goes to show my tastes are fairly consistent over time, I guess.

The coin @CircCam called my "white elephant" is this off-center 1826-29 British shilling error.
    • It was originally a gift to me from a kind world coin dealer (Jones? Jordan?) in a Hendersonville, NC coin shop, ca. 1992-93.
    • I sold it to Michael Swoveland (@Aethelred) for $100 in 1994, when I fell on hard times.
    • He later sold it on eBay, sometime around the Millennium (give or take a year or two).
    • By completely random chance, I stumbled across it again in the fall of 2016 on the Atlas Numismatics site.
    • There was zero doubt it was the exact same coin I'd sold 22 years earlier.
    • I had to have it back, even though it cost five times what I'd sold it for in 1994.
    • It was raw when Michael and I owned it in the 1990s, but went off to PCGS during Atlas' ownership, and graded XF40.

Yes, that has happened to me a few times, too.

I once posted this modern hobo carving on the CU forums. I had paid $20-something for it, as I recall.

It was carved on a 2015 Bombay Hook quarter, and the bird design from the host coin was left intact, so it had a bird on both sides.

    LT-owl-SHQ-04801-artistpic.png

I loved the owl on it, but someone wanted it for a gift for his (daughter?) who was a bird enthusiast. He twisted my arm until I finally accepted $100 for it.

Actually, that's not a crazy price for a skillful modern hobo carving. They often fetch more, and surprisingly tend to go for a lot more than most 19th century love tokens do.
