All these threads about finding Indian head cents and other old coins has got me wanting to get one myself. What are good brands/models to look at? My budget is ~$1500.
I spent about $1000, I bought a new Whites MXT, and an extra D coil, the carry case, a cpl books, all the extras, it was 1K out the door with tax. I love it, and have found stuff every trip out, but nothing but current coins and a cpl Hot Wheels.....
Whites are Great detectors so are the Garrett GTI 2500s, I happen to own one as well. http://www.garrett.com/hobby/products/gti2500data.htm Take Care Ben
I'm a big Garrett fan. Have owned several and no complaints. White is also a great product. My only problem is coming up with the time and location to use it.
With $1500 you can get a top of the line Whites DFX! There isn't any better, in my opinion. (Actually less than $1500).
I highly recommend Garrett: i had a GTA 1000 for 14 years, very easy to use, easy to read visual display, and more depth capability than you can dig. My old Garrett found me 8 gold coins, 25+ silver, and paid for itself many times over. The newer Garrett models are probably much better than my old one. They are a good choice!
For $1500 you can buy a lot of indian head cents in better condition than what you'll pull out of the ground.
If you plan on going anywhere near a beach, be sure and get a waterproof model like the Minelab Excalibur. Even though "beach" detectors are semi-waterproof, you'll always be worried about getting the control box wet by a high wave or a slip and fall. Better to get a waterproof machine and not have to worry about it.
Make sure you also buy a set of headphones so you can hear those faint signals and are not distracted by background noise. Headphones also give you an excuse for not engaging in conversation with every Tom, Dick and Harry who wants to talk to you while you are trying to search an area.
I was told that you need an engineering degree to work one of those, I was set on it, but was talked out of it by the dealer.....
Arizona Jack, the Garrett's are really VERY easy to use. Just switch it on, and go. It is probably more difficult to figure out how to use one of the modern mobile phones with all of the gadgets, than to use a Garrett detector! In fact, having owned 3 different brands, i would say the Garrett is the easiest to use simply, and still get good results.
I have a Metal plate with four srews in my neck and a metal pin with fishing line (Don't know the medical term for it. ) in the left shoulder. Will the Metal Detectors pick that up? Cheryl
You'd have to get pretty close to the coil or directly under it to set it off. You normally have a couple of feet between yourself and the coil while detecting, so I can't see it being a problem.
I don't think so Cheryl, I've got a titanium L5/L6 vertebra and screws in my left knee. It never registers when I go out. Take Care Ben
I would go with e-bay. Thats where I bought my last detector. Top of the line used Minelab Explorer 2 for $700.00. Just like Chevy and Fords everyone thinks their brand is best. I have used Whites and they are great detectors but in my humble opinion. Nothing beats a Explorer for target seperation. (finds good targets amoung trash). Whatever you choose, stick with it. Get to know what its telling you and you will get better and better with it each year. Its a blast. Jim
I have a Whites MXT that is 2 years old and has been used ONCE! Some day I'll have to get out and use it especially since I put a Sunray XL-1 on-line probe on it and a new pair of Killer B's "Hornet" headphones this winter. $250 worth of accessories on a unit I have never used! Just call me stupid.
I have the probe as well. Would not detect without it. Nice set up ya have. My friend has an MXT and does great with it. I just have a cheapie $12 pair of headphones though. Can't win em all. :smile
