Nice silver find, but the hole eliminates it as a "collectible" coin with numismatic value. Still worth at least melt, & maybe someone collects "holed" coins.
would match well to a thin chain to make a necklace out of it .. a somewhat large and heavy necklace but that is what probably happened to it when you see a hole near the edge of a coin.
The question brought forward was - if this Kennedy might be anything special? Well Lucked Out, it “SURE” is. You definitely hit the jackpot on this one. You see, your Silver Kennedy Half would now weigh less then other Silver Half’s because yours has a (Hole) drilled through it, thus reducing the weight of said coin! I guess one could consider this coin somewhat “special”, Lol
Someone thought it special as they drilled a hole to wear it around their neck. Otherwise it's now considered damaged and worth its weight in silver.
If you find penny over 100 years old with a hole, that would be nuts. During the civil war, soldiers would wear a penny as a pendant given by their families. This would provide luck and currency to buy food and shelter if needed.
actually civil war era the holes were put into coins so they could be sewn into their uniforms so they wouldn't lose their money easily and they wouldn't die broke.
It was probably both. "....the holes were put into coins so they could be sewn into their uniforms....(or)....wear....as a pendant..... so they wouldn't lose their money easily.....(and could)....buy food and shelter if needed. " " This would provide luck....(so).....they wouldn't die broke. " Both explanations make complementary sense to me.
Judging from the size of the hole, it's just over 2% of the coin. That would make it a roughly 88% silver find.
Hi, As you now know, a PM (personal message) shows up in your INBOX and not in your ALERTS. But it's all good. I got your PM.
