Just read this over on CU. Brent Pogue has passed away. RIP (I don't know where to post this, so if it needs to be moved to general discussion than do so, thanks)
I feel stupid, as I had to google the name. What a phenomenal collection! Yes, too young to fade away, but what an accomplishment while he was here.
Same here. Bummer. Way too young. It must have been amazing owning those coins. Just one would have been enough for me. He had the one coin I would own if I could own any one
I was under the impression he auctioned his collection through Stacks Bowers, but perhaps there were details I missed.
This article implies he sold, or tried to sell, the whole thing in 5 separate auctions: https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...lection-auctions-top-106-million-dollars.html
Also the 1822 $5. I got to play with a few of his coins when I photographed them for Tony Terranova. I'll dig up a few pictures tonight and post them.
I watched the auction that included the 1804 $1 and 1822 $5. When these coins came up, there were big delays with lots of telephoning by the SB staff. The coins were hammered as sold during the auction, but after the auction, were listed as passed. My speculations immediately after the auction are in the link below. At the time, I was naive about house and consignor bidding and big consignor control. Now, I think that at the last moment, he couldn't bear to part with the coins at any price. Very little info about Mr. Pogue on the internet - I did find a photo of him at Stacks Bowers at the time of one of his auction sales;
This is the CU thread where I learned it from. The member who started that thread, I feel knew Mr. Pogue. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1023481/i-heard-very-distressing-news-this-morning
I don’t think I could part with the 1822 $5. That’s the coin I’d own if I could own any one. Bruce Morelans sp 66 1794 $1 would be my second. Eliasbergs 1885 trade would be my third
