Cull either way but I'm curious to get more experienced collectors opinions https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338461489&mpre=https://www.ebay.com/itm/1856-or-1858-Flying-Eagle-Penny-Cent/352737760725?hash=item5220cf15d5:g:ZkwAAOSw1vxcx5wM
The lettering style of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is not that of 1856. So it is clearly an 1858 Large letters. He's just fishing for someone who wants to fill their 1856 album slot with a "maybe coin."
False advertising to suggest it could even be an 1856. The odds of it being an 1856 are 0%. It's just a ploy to get some fools to jack up the bidding. A ruse, a trick, a scam, a sham.
What's left of the last digit looks like an "8" to me. Also what's left of the "5" next to it looks the "5" on the 1858 Flyer.
Yeah, but yours is a small letters variety, and the coin in question is obviously a large letters. I'm sure you knew that, though.
If you draw a line down from the “hat” on the “5,” it runs next to the ball of the digit on the 1856 Flyer. On the 1858, it cuts into it. This rule applies on all 1856 and 1858 cents.
I can go to my LCS and buy this coin in better condition for $10.00. This is an insane price for this coin.
Instead of talking about odds, how about talking about specific markers on the coin which show that it can’t be an 1856 cent? You use the same logic for other rarities, such as the 1943 bronze. There could be a genuine one sitting in the junk bin at my LCS. But if I showed it here, you would say there is an absolutely 0% chance of it being real simply because it is a newly-discovered rarity. Such thinking helps no one. Specific markers help everyone.
The 1856 and the 1858 large letters both have the AM joined, but on the 1856 the center bar of the E's have large serifs that are joined to the upper and lower serifs. On the 58 large letters the serifs are smaller and not joined. The ebal coin has small serifs.
There are better ones offered (other auctions) on the same page. And you would want one that you can see the date, as well as other details.
