Hey Everyone! I am here with another Liberty Cap Large Cent I picked this one up for a solid 45$!

Now I was trying to determine the Sheldon #. I don't know how much experience many of you have with Sheldon's, or 1794's but I was hoping you could help me narrow it down.

I believe it to be EITHER S-60 (R-3) or S-61 (R-4) Due to the Close Date, The 'Flowing Hair blip' and the Thick Curl. I have images here of my coin. roib2zH.jpg RoU690n.jpg

Now here are some Thumbnailed images of FIRST NGC Graded S-60

And here the S-61 NGC Graded

I can't distinguish the two, maybe I'm missing something! Please Let me know any tips will help! Thanks for looking and checking this out! :)

I am no expert, but @Marshall is and he probably can identify it from memory!

The difference between S-60 and S-61 is the reverse since they share the same obverse die.The easiest way to tell the differences between the reverse dies is the location of the inner berry right of (N)T. The S-60 is above the bottom of T and the S-61 is below the bottom of T.

    So yours is the S-60.

Thanks alot! I have tried ordering the Penny Whimsy but my order has been canceled on me due to 'technical problems'

I am in love with these cents. Thanks for the great answer :)

A site that I have used and recommend is a posting of the Holmes Collection sale in 2009. it had nice examples of all known varieties except 1 which is unique and in the ANS collection. There are a couple of sites listing his collection. This is the one I use:

In addition, I like using the Heritage Archives to get more information and find sales prices. The descriptions are often a wonderful source of current information on each variety.

Another good way to tell 60 and 61 apart is the outer berries between D and S. S-60 has two berries and the leaf does not point at either of them, S-61 has one berry and the leaf points directly at it. You coin has two berries.
