I probably know the answer, but I have a 42 nickel with no P above the Dome. Not all nickels of this time period had the big P above the dome, right? I just had to ask. Thanks,,,,,Foo
You are correct. The one on the right is silver, the left looks like the pre and after war composition.
1942 made regular P and D nickels. 1942 also made 35% silver P and S nickels with the large MM over the dome. 1943 1944 1945 P D and S over the dome. You have a 75% copper and 25% nickel 1942 Philly nickel and a 56% copper 35% silver and 9 % manganese 1942 large P silver war nickel.
OK thanks yall. Wow Ivery never seen one with the big S up there. Learn something new every day. Thanks again. Oh, 1 last thing, was just curious if there have been any RPMs with the bigger MMS above the dome.
Yes there are RPM's on the large mintmarks, sorry but I don't have any pictures. I know there are some impressive P/P's and a good D/D.
Try the variety Vista or Wexler s doubleddie.com sites. They should have lots of good pics. You may want to surf around and look at other stuff as well. Wexler has lots of stuff on the minting process. The more you learn about the minting process, the easier it will be to sort out real errors from damage
There are plenty of RPMs for war nickels but they are pretty minor varieties that I don't collect, so these photos are from NGC Variety Plus, not from my collection. 1942-S/S VP-001 1943-P/P VP-004 Check out NGC's Variety Plus page, there are a ton of these listed.
