This was fairly difficult to picture. Anyways, hopefully I can get a good idea on the grade and value. thanks I have to say the coin looks better in person...
I see a few different things actually: top of 2nd "t" in states on obv middle of "1" in year on obv Middle of "n" in "ONE" on rev. in the field just too the left of the 2nd "T" in states any of this a variety possibility? but yeah nice coin, i will give it a EF-45 nice details.
Nice coin, I'll say XF-AU, looks cleaned though by the pics. How does it look in hand? Nice coin none the less! :thumb: Phoenix
Like I said, its nicer in hand, and actually has nice eye-appeal. The pictures I took made it look washed out a bit. Anyways, thanks for all your replys. I got it for 83$.
I agree with you, while it is a nice coin it is lacking sharpness and luster. I would say XF 40. Nice coin in my book any day!!!
I beleive that it looks better in person, but just going by the pic. It's obviously worth more than $50, but the pictures sell coins online.
I'm not trying to be a jerk to other posters, but every time someone post a not-so-great picture of a coin they claim it may have been cleaned. I can't figure this out. This 1859 doesn't have any clean lines, whiz lines and does not looked dipped (dipped copper looks almost golden). At least not in the pictures posted here. So, please explain why you think it's clean; in detail. Now on too the coin, this picture makes the coin look closer to BN AU and is a strong EF. I can see part of the second diamond and this is one of the highest points of the design. The other is the hair above the ear, but I can't make out the details because of the haze the plastic created. Can you remove the coin from the 2x2? I think then we could grade the coin more proper.
While I agree with your first statement I will add the exception that the only thing other posters have to go on is the picture posted. While a coin in hand may not look cleaned some pictures will make the coin look cleaned - even if it was not cleaned. I think the second picture - while still not great, does show a nice coin than I thought. I still think there is enough wear(around hair and feather tips) to make the coin XF, but I would upgrad it to a XF45. And it most certainly is worth more than $50. Now if the op wants to send it to me I will be more than happy to take another look. If enough people do this maybe I will have a third set of IHC's.
My analysis: 1859 Type 1- Copper-Nickel, Laurel Wreath Reverse (Without Shield) BN-XF-45 I would like a closer picture of the date to determine if the coin is a Breen variety. Red Book value (EF40) $110-Coin Values (EF40) $125.00 (No EF45 prices listed). Ebay high for EF $115.00-Low $49.99 and this depended on how good the pictures was taken. If you have macro mode features on your camera, and something to brace the camera against to keep it steady, I think the pictures would come out much better, or more clear. I do want to see the date clearly.
