I for one am amazed these still exist and are around. Has anyone here seen these in person? Would you buy this? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-...744755?hash=item23c2203033:g:yG0AAOSwpEldOmYs
Currently at $393.00......did you see the little yellow tag that has numbers like $1.00 and $0.25 on it? So they were bought at the auction for $0.25. or $1.00, or $1.25 and now they're $393.00.......the eBay auction on this bag started at $0.99 !! WoW
It's an interesting piece of history and exonumia. I dare say the Carson City Nevada stamped bag with visible dollar outlines will hammer much higher than the others listed.
As a mint bag collector, you guys are insane! The bidding doesnt surprise me a bit. I wish I could bid on it. It would be a great center piece for my collection Just a few of mine Just a few years ago I tried winning an 1860s New Orleans mint bag that held silver dollars. It went for over $500. Back in 2008, I believe, Heritage sold a 1924 Philly bag that held 1924 double eagles. It was in the mint vault during a robbery. It went for decent money too. These old bags can be really rare. A lot were destroyed. I remember hearing a story about how bankers would take empty bags and burn them. Then sift through the ashes looking for any specs of gold and silver that may have chipped or flaked off the coins. Not sure how true that is though. I find these bags to be fascinating with history and just thinking about the coins they once held is pretty interesting.
I'm in complete agreement with you. I only wish that I could afford some of the older ones, but this is the best that I can do. Chris
I try to collect WWII era and older. I love the war time alloy nickel bags. Ebay usually has some for pretty cheap. Most of the time, the frames I put them in cost more than what I paid for the bag.
I have seen a CC dollar bag sell befor and it topped $1000. What I find annoying is back in 1972 when the hoard first went on sale it was announced that the bags from the hoard would be sold as well but I have never seen or heard of any sale of the bags until the claim in this auction.
Those may or may not have been in original mint bags. The Continental Bank hoard probably were though.
I’ve seen and held two CC mint bags. They’re pretty cool. But the price is too rich for me to afford right now.
