Most album manufacturers would like to make them, but the series just started, they don't know what the innovations will be so they can't put those labels on, and lately the mint has had a habit of waiting a few years into a series and then making a change in finish, or composition, or adding another mint etc. The manufacturers don't like making a bunch of something only to suddenly have them be obsolete.
Anyone notice the 2018 proof Innovation Dollar is currently unavailable at the mint? Wonder if it will be sold out at around the current reported sales of 79,723 or will they issue more? It's time for a publication or blog to print a statement from the mint. I'd call the mint's PR department, but I've received bad info from them before. Update: If they don't have more already made, I don't think they can legally make more 2018 coins in 2019.
No they can't strike anymore now the 2018 is over. The question is do they have a stockpile of already struck pieces. They could be currently unavailable because they don't have any more packaged up ready for sale at the moment.
Just ordered my proof coin from the mint! They are on back order right now. So if you want to order one better do it now!!
Yeah, I just checked, backordered to 2/28/2019, that's 2 months, that should put a damper on mint sales of these.
For New York I'd nominate the Roebling family for their innovation in building the Brooklyn Bridge. If anyone doubts the difficulty of building the bridge should read David McCullough's book "The Great Bridge".
If anyone cares, I just noticed both proof and BU 2018 dollars are available from the mint again. (Even if no one cares, it's still true.) Still no word on any of the 2019 dollars.
Does anyone remember if the state quarter series, the national park series or the presidential dollar series were "late" in coming out (in comparison to the mints original schedule)? I'm all primed to collect this new Innovation Series, but wondering what the hold up is with releasing the four states for 2019?
I believe the whole Innovation dollar program was rushed to market and the first four states were given very little time to prepare. I expect the four 2019 issues late this year and then the program should get back to a regular pace. I got the reverse proof issue, probably won't get any more. (No, I didn't. I bought the regular proof issue) You can follow the schedule here
Good catch. I bought the regular proof coin that came out last year. I was looking at the product release schedule I linked and I guess the term reverse proof stuck in my neural network.
None of those were late in coming out, but all of them were authorized two to three years before they were to be issued so they had plenty of time to get designs and coinage tests done before their release dates. The innovation dollar was authorised only about 4 months before the 2018 coin had to come out and less than 6 months before the 2019's would normally have been expected to be released. This resulted in designs being selected and approved way to late for production of business strikes and too late to be included in the annual proof set.
Since the "P" and "D" mint marks are on the edges of these Innovation Dollars, it is likely that the "P" and "D" examples of each state will look identical to each other when displayed in flips or in some sort of coin album. Is there any way to display these coins in some sort of manner that would allow the mint marked edge to be displayed? I plan to use the standard "small dollar" coin flips and will mark each flip with the date and mint mark, but wish that there were a more handsome way to do this. Anyone have any thoughts? Other dollar coins have mint marks on edges, right? How are they stored?
You might check Airtite and Caps holders. I think some of them are designed to show the edge markings.
I don't know. Let me check my mail........hopefully I didn't subscribe to these things, but I can't depend on others to save me from myself.........even my 'handlers'.......Uh Ha Ha Ha Ha.........
