Almost a Canadian coin... Saint Pierre and Miquelon 1 Franc 1948. Canada conquered it several times but it always wound up back in France's possession eventually. During WW2 the islands caused quite a bit of turmoil after France fell. Newfoundland is only a few miles away, and wanted to invade to keep the Nazis from using it to spy on allied convoys for submarine warfare. Canada and the UK weren't keen on creating an international incident and pushing Vichy France from "neutral" to hostile. They dithered around so long that de Gaulle's Free French sent a couple ships in secrecy to bloodlessly reconquer it in late 1941. The US was furious with de Gaulle, but too busy after Pearl Harbor to do more than complain.
I wish I could take pictures like your 42 tombac.i don't have one of those.always enjoy looking at your coins.
Thanks very much! I like being able to share them, too. If you can get a feel for what it’s like then you can at least enjoy seeing it. I had a recent urge for something special since Canadian coins were circulating freely when I was a kid. This combines the fun of a special metallic composition, 12 straight sides, great luster, and a great reverse. We camped in Canada and I stood behind a beaver dam while one swam right up to me with a branch. They have a special spot in my memory. You can see why I had to get this.
Not many people have these cert'd because there were so many .. the cost to cert more than eats up any extra value in the coin.
Thanks. I rarely buy from this particular LCS because he loves to boast how little he pays for coins, silver and non silver, then sell them at HUGE mark-ups. So I didn't know how he priced his Canadian coins. This was on his coin board.
Looks like a coin I had once. I wonder if it's the same one? LOL. I've owned so many over the last decade...
