Went outside today at 1245 in the 91* weather (104* heat index) to take a few pictures of my coins that had bad original pictures. I was outside for less than 5 minutes. By the time I was done taking my pictures, the flips were starting to get melty as was I. They still are far from perfect pictures but they are a lot better than what I had before. I hope you all like what I suffered so much for Euboia, Histiaea AR Tetrobol 3rd Century-146 BC Obverse: Head of the nymph Histiaea right, wreathed with vine Reverse: Nymph Histiaea seated right on stern of galley Syracuse, Sicily AE 19mm After 410 BC Obverse: Head of Athena left, wearing Corinthian helmet Reverse: Hippocamp left Sardes, Lydia AE14 133-1 BC Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right Reverse: ΣAΡΔIANΩN, club, ΔΔY monogram (legible when the club is horizontal), all within oak wreath Seleukos III AE16 Obverse: Head of Artemis right, quiver at shoulder Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣEΛEYKOY, Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow & resting on bow Alexander III (The Great) AE17 ca 325-310 BC Pella Mint Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lionskin Reverse: B (thunderbolt) A between a club and bowcase
Very nice pictures. I am looking at them inside with a cold beer ( here in Montreal it’s also 91°F ). Did you take them with a phone or a “real” camera?
Just my phone. My "set up" was sit down on back steps, put coin in left hand and iphone6 in my right hand lol.
I wish the Sardes came out a little better. It is a pretty light colored coin but if you get it just the right way, you can really make out the details on the reverse.
Very nice! That's the eazy peezy method I subscribe too. Though I rarely cut them out... I don't have the patience lol. Sounds like you guys have the great that we had M-Th... Oofda!
I like your pictures FF! I know better than to start up with ancients as that will lead to another obsession, lol. We are 100 degrees right now in West Texas (102 heat index). But looking forward to Tuesday when a "cool" front is predicted with a high of only 89! I can't wait for the fall.
That is one dangerous coin for newbies to go after. Be careful... My example Los of fakes of that type, perhaps more fakes than real. This and about a dozen other Greek coins are very dangerous for newbies to buy without knowledge. Yours looks real though. Beat up and worn, but otherwise ok.
Play with tilting the Histiaea and the Sardis obverses a tiny bit so more light reflects off the face and there is less glare on the hair. a tiny, tiny bit of clay or lump of dried hot melt glue a couple mm thick will change the angle a bit and sometimes help. Overall the photos are fine. Have you noticed that nicer coins sometimes make better photos? You don't want to be in direct sun outside but under a bit of shade (porch, tree) often is softer and more pleasing especially with rough coins.
I bought it from a reputable dealer so I am not too worried about authenticity. If it were to be fake, I am only in the hole $25 so it would have been rather cheap learning experience. Yours is a beautiful example!
I will mess around with them again. Another day though when it isn't hotter than Hades out. You've got me thinking of how I can fashion something to help position them. I'm sure I can get better pictures still, even though they are rough coins. I'm going to try next with a couple of nicer coins. I'm sure they will end up way better than the bulk of my collection. Nicer details make for less work trying to bring them out
