It's really hard to tell if the luster has been impacted by an old cleaning or not with photos, but it's a great to unbelievable find either way.
Thank you. It was 19 and some change. After comparing real cameo's to mine, I do see a big difference, however this coin suits me for it's purpose.
Almost half of this one's $28 auction-winning price was paid for with my ebay bucks, so it ended up costing me right at $15 last night. Seller's photos.
Maybe this 1944-S Mercury was not really a steal at $13.20. In the seller's photo that cow patty in her hair looked like a shadow. It wasn't. And I don't find it as much as a "reverse rainbow" or "Premium Quality Solid Gem BU++" as the auction suggested. The colors are there, all right, but you have to look diligently to start seeing them within the brown. Still, it's mine now and I'm keeping it. I'll just think of it as "golden" instead of brown and it will be much, much better.
I have already gotten another 44-S from the same dealer for less. Watch this space next week and we'll see how that turns out. Seller's photo.
I don't know what this coin should go for, but my spreadsheet says I paid $7.99 for my '44-S. Might not have as much detail as yours, but the cow patty would not have deterred me from buying it. Unlike most, though, I am not into toned coins, so I would have passed it over in preference to the second one you posted... makes me want to go look for my '44-S to see how it compares.
As I noted yesterday I made it a point to check out my own '44-S. It's a bit worn on the higher spots compared to this one, but retains a lot of its original luster. I'm happy with it.
