Museum wax is a clear-ish hard putty that you can shape, and use to set museum valuables in place or attach items to. Pretty cool stuff. My ex-wife used to work in a museum, and I learned about that cool stuff years ago. Google "museum wax" and you can find it for sale. Never had a problem with it, museums will have objects set into place and under lots of lighting. The curators swore by it, and used it with many valuable and ancient objects...
I got the small container, and I don't remember if it were expensive. However, I only need a small amount with the assurance that it is ok to use for a coin mounting
I also bought wooden circles that come in a variety of sizes which can be glued to the ends of the dowel. Right now I have one at the base to keep it steady (see pic), and I haven't had trouble balancing the coins on the top of the relatively thick dowel (I use two sizes but could go smaller). I have the materials to make dozens and dozens of dowels of every length and width, all for about $15.
My photos are terrible generally.. after reading a few threads I decided to try the iPhone (again). I purchased an App called "iPhone Camera Plus".. it was .99 cents.. https://www.globaldelight.com/iphone/cameraplus/ It has a few features that I like... including Macro mode.. and "big button".. where the whole screen is the shutter button. touch anywhere and it will count down 6 seconds (or more depending on how you set it up) and then take the photo (to reduce camera shake). Very easy to use.. I like it! There are many other features I have not tried yet. Can @Nicholas Molinari or @dougsmit please point me to the thread describing how to set up the "flower pot" system? I would love to reduce the background editing time to absolute zero. I see the setup earlier in this thread but don't fully understand how it works... I only have an iPhone 6s as I only get phones once my daughters are done with them... (and for some reason they're always rose gold in color... Oh well.) My 16 yr old has the iPhone 8+ which apparently takes beautiful photos.. but she is like Charlton Heston .."from my cold dead hands"... before I get a hold of it for more than 30 seconds!. Anyway - here are a couple of quick pics. Has some potential. Any help is appreciated!
Your focus is great and that is the hardest part. For the flower pots I used those plastic ones and cut large holes in the bottoms, then taped them together. That was it. I didn’t even have to buy pots, I just found them in the garage and still have the same set-up.
Hmmm... I guess I thought I was missing something - but it really is that simple. Thanks for the reply.. I will give this a try.
Thanks for the heads-up on this app. Real possibilities with this one. Which version do you use for coin stuff? Do you need anything more than Lite?
Apparently I have the full version. Not sure how much it costs but it is worth it. So incredibly easy to use. Just click freestyle and change the ratio to 2:1. Transferring the photos from your iPhone gallery is the click of a button. You can do various other things but that is all I use. Highly recommended.
I’ve also found that natural light from the window on a cloudy day beats artificial light for most coins. I still hold the camera in my hand because I find I get the best focus this way, but eventually I’ll get a more functional iPhone tripod.
Another great app for coin photography is Eraser. If you need to clip out coins from a distracting background and need a transparent or black or white one... this app is really easy to use for iPhone.
When I started scanning contents on this site, your title caught my eye- I have yet to master taking good pictures with my iPhone (I’ve gotten much better but uncertain how my pictures compare with others= not confident enough to post) I have purchased a snake with a camera, thought this would be cool to look down my drain or the space between upstairs & downstairs- the support beams are not exposed. Idk...thought was a good idea 6 years ago...it’s waiting in a drawer... Microscope camera= has been patiently waiting on a side table for almost a year. I get so frustrated when trying to understand and follow instructions that assume I know something about what I’m trying to do... I saw part of your picture and thought it was kinda cool that you took a picture of the moon, I like to see the moon phases on a clear night or peeking around clouds... Opened the link and saw the Man on the Moon!! LOL! Saw your set-up and found this very impressive! I wouldn’t have thought about this - it definitely shows off the coin quality. Different dowels sizes for different coins. By using the dowel and blackening inside the pot & dowel, the focus is strictly on the coin! No light reflecting off of any other surface. WOW! Very, very awesome!! Nicholas is so cute and very awesome too...
