In the olden days, many collectors collected by date. "Mintmarks" weren't widely understood or valued. An 1875 was an 1875... hey, that one's really flashy and looks nice! Pop it in the album! Yeah, it's a proof. What's a proof? Who cares. It's an 1875 and it fits the hole in my set! (this was largely the mindset in the late 1800's) (.... this is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but the collecting mindset of the day was completely different than today) So, to hear you say this makes me extremely curious about the whole set. There may be quite a few cool coins in there (maybe collected near the time of issue?) Did it sit for 12 years in an album, or 120?
More from the album: The 1876 is also a proof. 64 L is a RPD. The 09-S has a few obverse spots, but is a gemmy RB, in my opinion. This album has a story behind it, but it's 3rd hand. So I don't know how true it is. Gent I bought it from said he bought it in tact from a CA dealer, who told him a lady brought it in to sell and he told her that her husband put a lot of work into it, that it was extremely nice. She decided not to sell to the dealer but thanked him. Then several months later she came back in and said she was ready to sell. After that the dealer flipped it to my guy, then I bought it over a decade later from him. Of course, you never know what's true....
I can only imagine being able to put proof and Unc. Indians into an album. And possibly some from Pocket change. What a fun and great post Physics.
I'll guess MS 63 ...I can actually see this one run the entire spectrum from UNC Details (altered surfaces/cleaned/QC) all the way to MS 65...just depends what kind of grading "standard" you happen to run into.
Nice bunch of coins. I like the 57 and 76 proofs a lot actually. I see the original coin as a 64 rb too
I tend to agree. But in hand after a long look, there were no hairlines and the color was natural. That made me think the only problem could be that long ago it was dipped out, which hurt the luster, then it retoned slowly over time. But then I figured I was overthinking it, and that it's a minimum 64 RB, so send her in.
There were only a few easily identifiable problem coins. The 08-S was cleaned. The 71 was UNC but cleaned. And I think the 78 had about 2 dozen carbon spots. It was Red, but eaten up. There are a few others that might be borderline, but mostly they were all super nice.
Great collection I remember seeing a complete set come up at an antique auction a few years back. Everything was unc. Even the 77. Which I thought 63 rb. But at $35k was out of my range though I think there was money left
It's definitely worth the gamble sending in (maybe even more than once if it goes details the first time). Best of luck and we'll all be looking forward to the grade reveal.
Is that a DDR I see on the 1870? Also, the reverse made me immediately think dipped. That flat orange is never a good sign. I hope it is just the pictures, but that would explain the flat luster.
