Hello, I just received this CC Morgan and as you see, the first "C" was produced in error. Is this a registerd VAM, is the coin worth more? Thank you for your time! Scott
I have a certificate of authenticity and just went to my local coin dealer that also authenticated it. I was thinking the same, but it is real. Does this error add to the value?
I just had the coin authenticated by a ruputable dealer in my area, here are more pics. Now that we know it is real, is this considered an error>
#1) Welcome to the forum. #2) That is not a certificate of authenticity. #3) Not commenting on the validity of the coin, but the mark by the mintmark is a hit (from another coin).
Thanks for the reply, I have a certificate of authenticity from the organization that put the book together.
Not to be rude---but I think that the "organization" was wrong. I still feel that the coin is not real. As for the mintmark. I belive it to be more of a hit as Frank said, and not really a type of error. I could be missing it from the photo.....I hate to bother you, but could you try to get a close up shot of JUST the mintmark? Speedy
I will wait for better close-ups of the coin and especially a close-up of the Mint Mark before offering my honest opinion on the coin's authenticity and whether it is an error or damage! However, merely based on the the pictures that we have, i would at the least, believe that the coins has been harshly cleaned and dipped too many times. Frank
The left side of the reverse looks off to me. But, like Speedy, I'd like to see close-ups of the mint mark area and find out exactly whats going on there. To me it looks like a ding, but the phots aren't too focussed. Guy~
The lettering on the REV. is what looks off to me. Now please remember---I don't own any Morgan Dollars right now. I have owned and gone though thousands so I could be wrong since I don't have one in hand to look at the same time. Speedy
I can't see anything that makes me think it is a fake right off. But it has certainly been dipped to death and seen a lot of wear. I also agree that certificate is meaningless. As for the mint mark, there is raised metal, almost circular in fashion with a low spot in the middle, above the left C and the top of the left C has been obliterated by whatever caused that raised metal. We really do need a close up of the mint mark area. I suppose it could have been caused by a small die break, but I have never seen one quite like that.
After looking at Doug's close up pictures of the MM, I really have to wonder about the coin. That 'hit' just ain't right. Also, once again, that 'certificate of authenticity' isn't one. they may say real, but they are not numismatic experts. Just a company that sold coins.
We need to see a real close up. It almost looks like a O but mint did not make Morgan's with a O until 1879
