I don't see any doubling, either. The "T" in LIBERTY appears to have taken a hit while in circulation and is PMD. Chris
I thought the same thing. He took the picture through the cellophane packaging. @Richard Holm take a picture of it outside the packaging. I don't see doubling on the coin either.
Welcome to Coin Talk , I do see some doubling of the letters , I think this is caused by a worn die , or is maybe referred to as hub doubling. Someone will correct me if I used the wrong term . I am still learning like lots of members are. Not a DDO . Dillan
For some reason that coin looks like it was circulated , could you possibly give us a picture of the packaging also . I just curious as the coin looks damaged in places like a circulated coin . It is possible that a lot of that may well be on the plastic . Thank You . dillan
Hub doubling is the collectable kind of doubling. The "worthless" forms of doubling include MD (machine doubling) and wear doubling from an old die.
@Kentucky , Thank you for the information , I learn something new every day and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me and others . Dillan
Welcome to Coin Talk. IMO none of your coins look like a Doubled Die. Check the following site to see what Mechanical Doubling (MD) and Die deterioration Doubling look like: http://doubleddie.com/144801.html Here are photos of some 1970 S Doubled Die cents: http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/DDO 1970-S.htm
I hesitated in saying die deterioration. I only say that because MD is one of the biggest reasons for Die deterioration. It is a movement in the chamber. These repeated movements leed to further die deterioration, and every stage along the way can be called a different form of Mechanical worthless doubling. I think the coin we are looking at is interesting from a study point of view. I hope the Op can give us some updated Photo's. @Richard Holm
I have a 1970 US Uncirculated coins Mint set and it only has coins minted at Philadelphia and Denver. Curious to know if S mint coins came pre packaged from the Mint or were they packaged by a third party? Or, did they come packaged by the US Mint in a different set?
Thank you for your reply. I haven't looked at the set in years. Didn't even remember if the S mint cent was there.
Got my camera today. here are first pics of 1970s ddo and ddr. whatever you say, let me have it with humor please.
@Richard Holm ...There are 53 DDO and 6 DDR listed at Wexler, disregard the DDRs, they are all proof and your coin is not. Based on your new cam pics, I do not see any indications of doubling that match Wexlers' listings. In all fairness, I may have missed something, but you need to check all the DDOs to see if your coin matches up with Wexler. Again, disregard the proof DDOs. And, if you don't find a match at Wexler, try Variety Vista. Your coin is MS61, imo, and a large date...I have tried to inject some humor for you, but, alas, I have failed miserably...Spark
Nice looking photos. I thing that your coin has some die deterioration. I can't find any matches to the MM placement.
