Where i believe the 8 is thinking it is a 1981, the 8 is unreadable. It cant be a 1921 as it's not wheat on reverse. That is not a gouge. It is a mint mark fully raised above the surface of the penny. Since it's not a scratch or a gouge, I have to believe it's a mint error. Lmk what you think. I've seen doubled dates but nothing like this. Thx so much.

looks like damage outside the mint. Perhaps a bored person in a garage playing with the date with tools. Never know what people will come up with when they are bored. This might be one of those. I have a large U.S. Cent with the word CENT on the back altered to say a very ugly word. It is NOT a mint error either.
Just looks like post mint damage to me, too...although I am not an expert. The metal on the surface of coins can be moved around by any number of accidents and wear it suffers over the years of circulation or by intentional acts done to it. Welcome to CoinTalk!
its damage, look how banged up that coin is, it probably spent some time on the ground in a parking lot...
Thx for the welcome to the group! I looked at the coin through a stereoscope at school this morning. The # looks like a 2 which it shouldn't. I understand there is some scratch or something across the # itself though I'm still wondering if that happened at the mint, but what I am focusing more on is a part of the # that runs down and points towards the 9. There is no gouge or scratch on that so that piece hasnt been altered. It's a part of the coin and is raised and therefore is not a part of any # at all. I feel that it was definitely originally a date error. I'll try to get a better pic at some point and upload it. Thx again for everyone's thoughts
FYI, it did *not* happen at the mint. It was damaged after the mint in the years of circulation. If you look at the *entire* surface of the coin you'll see a lot of damage done to it already. Even all the high marks were scraped. It's just that something hit that particular area of the date and pushed it over. It actually happens frequently once one starts looking and cataloging their change. Coins are used in commerce and end up in big piles in purses, cash registers, vending machines, etc etc etc where they get damaged.
I have a 1981 penny with the first three numbers of the date smudged or disfigured from mitten process could anybody tell me if they know if they've seen another one like this
This is supposed to be a reputable coin forum. Your reply is middle-schoolish behavior at best. I think I'll report you since this site cares about their reputation, and you sir, are not enhancing it with your reply. When ppl are new to collecting they will have questions that experienced coin collectors will realize what the outcome is. But on this site, they usually treat ppl with respect and explain with patience. You sir are a disrespectful person. Your reply is unprofessional to say the least. The rest in this thread are professional and respectful.
