And Drusus, I in no way mean to be a jerk. I have put up my ancients, all 2 of them, and have asked your opinion and those of the others who know them here. I respect you opinion and value it when it is time. You know why? Because you know what your talking about, and I don't.
I believe there should be another forum started for people to put ebay links and grump and whatever else they do.
what about dealers who rip apart other dealers auctions? i would say no matter how over the top an auction might be, it would seem a conflict of interest to advocate for others to have it removed if i too used eBay to sell coins. -steve
asciibaron, That is why that ebay has a team that investigates reported Auctions and items and if the claims of fraud or fake items are unwarranted, they dismiss them and the Auctions continue to run! They do not simply take every person that reports an Auction or item for their word! They also keep and account (list) of eBay Members that report items and a Member can be suspended or totally kicked off eBay after making several reports that were unfounded. I suppose that a few competitors report each other from time to time but that is one of the reasons that eBay has the team to investigate the reports and determine if they are unwarranted or warranted. .I've always thought the meanings of intelligence and knowledge to be similar, unless I'm mistaken about that Knowledge is what one knows. Intelligence is the ability to know. (and use)
Your definitions are quite correct, but I do not see the similarity. Einstein was extremely intelligent, but I doubt that he was very knowledgeable about coin collecting. In fact, I have heard that he even had problems making change.
it seems this thread has drifted into the realm of the pedantic. glad to see that eBay auction bashing is being justified in the name of "education" by the resident experts. i'll sleep better knowing the CT forum members are watching eBay for fakes and rip offs. Team America can't fail. as for the remark regarding "intelligence" - wow. if i had meant that i was simply a smart person i would have said that. i used the word intelligence because it encompasses the ability to reason, think abstractly, learn, solve problems, and comprehend ideas. what next, if i say i have prejudices will you think i'm a racist or bigot? if so, maybe it's time to get a better dictionary. -Steve
Steve, Actually a good thread you know. Lots of opinions and we obviously all don't agree. Would be extremely boring if we did wouldn't it? You could post s subject then every member could copy and paste "I agree". On a sillier note I can't help but notice that a thread about CTs "obsession" with ebay turned into a pretty long thread. Look what you've done man! clembo
Steve, Is this the only collectible forum you belong to? I don't think there is a forum anywhere where ebay is mentioned on a daily basis and most have devoted entire sections just for ebay discussions with links to auctions. Like I said earlier, no matter what the collectible, ebay is probably the largest "dealer" in the world on a daily basis so it is understandible that they are going to be a common discussion of any forum out there. Like it or not, we have to accept the fact that ebay is a part of daily life worldwide anymore and an integral part of any hobby. And not just on the internet. It just seems you can't go anywhere and not hear ebay mentioned in normal conversations.
Actually I think this thread is turning into a rope. And you know what they say happens if you give a coin talker enough rope.
I appreciate some of the ebay posts. Being a newer member, maybe I just haven't got tired of them yet. Some are dumb. Since ebay is talked about so much, maybe it should have it's own forum here on CT?? Call it something like: Ebay: For better or worse. Let everybody post anything ebay related there and get all of them out of the other forums. Isn't that usually what happens if there's enough interest in something? I find myself going back and forth between here and Ebay a lot. I'm sure others do as well. Just a thought.
I appreciate the ebay posts... only because I am new to coin collecting and truthfully, if not for the posts here, would have been burned severely. Plus ebay posts often lead to more info about the coin in the auction. Specific forum... perhaps, not my decision. and if you are tired of them, don't read'em. But I do appreciate them and it has helped me a lot. I just bought my first coin off ebay. I tried being patient and consistently lost them to higher bids, but the wife found one she liked and we bid to win it. thanks for asking, and thanks for sharing! (ya, I am late to this rope, not sure where it has ended up.)
That says it all, right there. The exposing of bad practices by some e-bayers is a major positive of this forum. Our coin club meeting last night had a lengthy presentation about on-line coin trading issues - mostly e-bay. Yes, experienced collectors know most of the pitfalls - but it's still good that the issues get reposted from time to time to help the newbies.
No problem, I think I was more of the jerk. I DO try to hold my toungue and I do mostly avoid ebay threads or threads that I just dont care to get involved with. I would prefer a more free and open forum than one that is overly restictive so I dont want to stop people from posting what they wish. I will try to keep future rants to a minimum.
