This has AU-58 details, possibly MS, but there is a scratch on the reverse. Instead of grading it AU details as it is obviously damaged, PCGS went the route of “this is what we feel this coin should be worth”. Market manipulation, plain and simple.

AU Details for sure, but not for the scratch, but for a cleaned obverse.

That scratch is way too severe for that coin to have been graded. I know what would have happened had I sent it in...

The scratch is in an out of the way place. It looks like a nasty staple scratch which is a no-no on a straight graded coin.

Come on guys, it’s just a scratch :-D

Serious question, can we be sure it’s not on the holder?

  7. A staple scratch for sure. That is why I hate 2 X 2's that are stapled. I bought a near perfect 20 cent piece that is PL cheap because it has a very faint staple scratched. It is for my typeset, but someone sure ruined an expensive coin.

Yes, I don't like holders with staples at all. Coins and sharp edges do not mix.

I used to use the staped 2X2 cardboard holders for Civil War Tokens when I was a dealer, but the economics of the situation dictated that at the time. I always made sure to crush down the rounded staple edges on the back. That is a must.

Happens I was at the LCS this morning... and within earshot of a seemingly otherwise knowledgeable customer who asked the salesperson “ How do you press down the staples (in the 2x2)”. The salesperson correctly responded with “press down snugly with needle nose pliers.” The customer went on to say that a friend had suggested tweezers. Why are we not surprised by staple-scratched coins!

TPG..please do not make straight-grade cleaned and or damaged coins the new normal. Also, please do not grade circulated, possibly toned, coins MS 60 or better. This is all about Market Grading in conflict with common sense basic numismatic principles. Follow the money!

Pardon my photos, as Chrome "blue screened" my images/cameras computers. I believe however the following images show the opposite of "detail" rating anomalies. 2 coins, same date/mint were submitted together (i.e. 1 number apart) to a TPG believed notorious for details unseen ratings. 1 has beautiful fields/devices (left coin), and the other has appreciably lesser, including an obnoxious "scratch", both receiving the same grade, and CAC acceptance.

Very difficult to comprehend. You just never know!

I think the scratch looks a little heavy for a staple scratch, The top of the obv looks like it has had some buffing done to it.

Cleaned and scratched. I wouldn’t touch it. I actually will carefully hammer them flat against a block of hardwood

It is an awful looking coin. No luster—just the artificial sheen of a cleaning, and yes, the scratch is that bad. AU details—cleaned, damaged.

Is AU cleaned the new MS? Or, was the grader busy reading a dirty novel, while working?

Probably either everyone was hung over Monday morning or was Friday afternoon and just wanted to go home

Valid points and concerns. I use a flat clinch stapler, that doesn’t round the staples. Saves me a lot of time with pliers. I like the 2x2s because it lets me put so much detail on the holder without spending a lot of money. I have, however, had a couple coins get scratched from them.
