Because as a cross over with no risk of a downgrade the PCGS 70s can and often do bring more money. Does it make sense on everything no, but there can be wide spreads of thousands of dollars where it's certainly worth a shot.

Should he try and cross this one, too many variables to say yes or no. Could he get more money if it did cross, yes very easily could be an extra couple grand if he doesn't just blow it out at the first online sale

That would not be possible. He has died. It was left in his estate. Thanks for the kind words though. I'll pass it on when I see in decades from now.

Sometimes you can see the difference. It need be no more than a spot in the field that is no bigger than a pinhole. Other times you can’t tell the difference and sometimes there isn’t one. The TPGs control the numbers of these coins to keep the prices up. Sometimes they liberalize their standards and make more product when they are looking for more submissions and resulting revenue.

I'm thinking that PCGS will not cross a 70 without removing it from the slab. They want to see it out of the plastic. That may have changed or I could be wrong.
I would not try to cross the coin. Too much risk. Auction results have it at 13K the way it is.

They let you set the 70 as a minimum grade now, but yes the chances of success will be very low on things like this with the slab blocking parts of the coin
