My dad has a 1995 W- Silver Eagle graded from NGC with a 70 grade. Would it make any sense in submitting it to PCGS for grade?

I don't think it would upgrade :) and am not sure if a PCGS would be any better than an NGC. You could always go for a green or gold bean.

True, but it's worth more. Though, it may be a risky gamble if the grade came back lower I guess.

Keep it in NCG. It can't upgrade any higher, and you risk loosing a few point if you send it ino PCGS.

PCGS would downgrade it just so they could say that NGC screwed up.

No it wouldn’t make any sense. What’s wrong with NGC? I also thought MS70s can’t be crossed - do you really want to crack it out...?

Sounds like you have a bone to pick with PCGS.

PCGS does not make it worth more, I know that's debatable, its rarity is the same, if the collector thinks the coin should not have graded 70 you wont get 70 price. The market is fluid, so the venue and auction house may have the most to do with the price.

One can send an MS/PF 70s for crossover and set the minimum as 70 (if it's than 70, they will return it to you in the original holder).

    https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-announces-new-crossover-policy-topgraded

I'd also suggest not to crack-out the coin from an NGC 70 holder. While there is a chance that PCGS gives it a 70, the chances are higher that the coin never makes its way back into any 70 holder (a 69 is a bid drop off).

Yea, PCGS has no respect for NGC grades 99% of the time. When you ship a coin in an NGC holder to PCGS for the same grade, you have 2.99 strikes against you. If you think you deserve an upgrade, crack it out, and send it in raw.

Why would anyone with a 70 coin from one of the big two send it to the other service?

    Duh!

While most of us wouldn't see a difference, there are coins where people will pay more for a PCGS 70 compared to an NGC 70 (it might be registry related, believing the hype, personal preferences, etc).

If Daddy has a big bucks buyer for a graded bullion coin, I’d say take the money and run, the heck with PCGS or NGC. One of these days, that idiocy is going to collapse.

Most of us can’t tell the difference between a modern 69 and a 70. I’m sure the TPGs would say they can. I challenge them to post silver eagles graded 69 and 70 and show us the difference. I’m not holding my breath waiting for it.

People buying MS70 are buying designated pieces of plastic.
