i have been considering a type set based on the coins of Nazi puppet states and protectorates. i trying to decide if this is worth the effort given many of the coins will be zinc and not very attractive. i already have several French, Danish, and Bohemian zincs, and they look more like Necco wafers than currency given their powdery look. here is the list of countries and the years involved. Puppet states: -Romania (1940-1944) -Bulgaria (1940-1944) -Hungary (1944-1945) -France (1940-1944) -Slovak Republic (1939-1945) -Croatia (1941-1945) Protectorates: -Bohemia & Moravia (1939-1945) -Denmark (1940-1943) -Steve
i have coins from all but Croatia and Bulgaria - next show i'll be on the hunt for these. i'll post some pictures once i have an example of from each of the 8 puppet/protectorates. -Steve
That would be a really nice set Steve! One that I wouldnt mind having in my collection. I've been trying to collect German 1 through 5 Mark coins from the Nazi era. Its just a nice change from the U.S. sets that I've been working on. I'd like to see pics of your set also once its complete.
I guess the other side of the coin (no pun intended) is the date set of 1939 - 1945 Soviet coins I'm putting together. Interestingly enough I kinda like some of the coins in WORSE condition better... for example I can imagine the 1942 and 1943 coins being dug out from under some heap of rubble in Stalingrad. Another interesting thing is that the coins, when I find them, are not that expensive, but they are devilishly difficult to come across. this set idea of mine might not be wroth it since the bulk of the coins are zinc and they don't age well. i have heard if i use Vaseline on them, they will look decent, but your need to do the Vaseline trick about every 6 months. i might just dump this idea and work on Soviet block coins instead. -Steve
If you don't dump it, add the army 2 and 5 pffenig coins issued for military use in occupied teritory to your list, as well as the Belgian and Netherlands coins.
