I got an interesting private message on Collectors Universe last week...

Rick, my benefactor in this extremely lopsided deal, provided this in the way of backstory. I don't think he will mind my sharing it and the previous snippets of our PM conversation. I did not reveal his CU username.

    This was fun...

This stuff makes the hobby fun for me.

An unknown artist carves up a numismatic rarity 150+ years ago...

...an astute hobbyist spots the 16-star reverse in a junk box 30+ years ago and buys it for a dollar...

...the astute collector passes the token along to another collector who appreciates its history for $1.55...

I appreciate high dollar rarities, I really do. But I appreciate these $1 rarities, too. Maybe even more.

Who is CB? Who carved CB into the coin? If only coins could talk. Good stuff.

I totally agree. This kinda stuff is what it's all about, as far as I'm concerned. I wonder if ol' CB is looking down on all this, from The Other Side, and smiling at our activities as we wonder over the mysteries.

I also agree, and I have enjoyed your posts and videos on love tokens and other exonumia, circ. cameos, metal detecting, researching MD finds, and other topics.

Rick obviously has a knack for cherrypicking, and for picking deserving recipients of largesse.

    Great story!

Nice to see good people appreciating good people.

As Major Frank Burns from M*A*S*H put it, "It's nice to be nice to the nice."

    Congratulations.

Coin is in hand now, and nicer than the previously posted pix.

I shall make a feeble attempt to rephotograph it and post it soon.

Celebratory giveaways of more gold fanams coming.

Such a cool piece of history for more than one reason. Some of my favorite coins were kind gifts from others. Like those, I’m certain this one will reside in the “not for sale” collection.

Maybe I missed reading thru this, but this is a draped half dime whose date can likely be identified by the reverse die. To my eye this looks like either 1803 or 1805, though I have no reference for this coin.

Edit: I missed it indeed. Is it a 1798 or 1798/7 dime then?

    It is a 1798/7 16-stars dime.
