Hello! Can anyone help me identify the Sheldon variety on this Head of 94 1794 large cent? Also, would appreciate any other comments on the coin itself as well. Thanks a lot for any input
S-57 R1 Early Die State. Way out of my price range. I suspect TPG might straight grade it, but EAC would net grade it. They are real particular about higher grade Cents and net grade higher grades for things they would not in lower grades. My Noyes isn't handy so I can't place it in the condition census.
Yeah, I think so too - but was also wondering about the worn part of the reverse and the “shiny” areas on the obverse.
It depends on what they had for breakfast that morning. My guess is XF to AU if there aren't any signs of cleaning or tooling. But the top of the reverse could cause a lower grade since they aren't good at knowing the difference between wear and axial misalignment. They would have the advantage of seeing it in the copper which is necessary for accuracy.
Low AU is possible although technically I agree with XF. But old copper gets some leeway and it's a beautiful coin.
I also think it’s a beautiful coin! Not mine though. How much would you think should retail for nowadays?
That's tricky as a small difference in grade points on a coin like that can be a very huge difference in value. I don't believe the reverse scuff marks would detail this coin. (If that is what Marshall is referring to.) There are a number of varieties of the 1794, so first you must determine which one it is. Here is a link: https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/101/large-cents/liberty-cap/1794-P/all-varieties/ Assuming it is a common type, in XF USA coin book lists the retail from 4000-5000. If it were VF those prices are cut in half. I can't find a quick search for an AU price, but PCGS has it list for 2X or more the XF price. https://www.pcgs.com/prices/detail/flowing-hair-large-cent/38/most-active
