Anyone know where to get a list of respectable grading services for paper money? (or care to offer one yourselves?)

    Thanks,

    Jerry

CGA, PCGS and several others (all whose names escape my tired mind this early in the morning lol)

if you do a quick search on Ebay for graded notes or currency .. i am sure you will see alot of names. if they have alot of auctions by different folks, then it could possibly be a bigger name.

    Good idea.

There seem to be quite a few shady coin grading services. Is this true with paper money too? If so, anyone know any services to avoid?

    Thanks much,

    Jerry

are there any to avoid? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!

as i suggested, if you see a 'grading company' that has 200 auctions, but all by the same seller... stay away :)

SGS is one to stear clear of no matter what they grade... coins, currency, stamps, or hair-pieces... staw away from them!

The 3 top Companies for Paper Money are (to my knowledge) PMG, PCGS and CGA...

Others exist, however, I would not submit to them...
    My opinion only!!

    Thanks for the input folks.

Those three (PMG, PCGS and CGA) are the only ones that advertise in the Green Sheets.

We'll stick with those for now. If anyone knows any other worthwhile services, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

PCGS graded coins command a premium over the other top tier coin graders.

I'm not sure if the same applies for currency, but it may be something to look into and take into consideration before getting a note slabbed..

If you ask me theres only 4 grading companys that are worth considering. But there are a few otheres that I would buy a coin in IF I CAN SEE THE COIN CLEARLY or better yet in person first. Tops 4 IMHO PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG. In that order. After that you can find some nice coins in PCI and NTC holder's for less money then if they were in one of those first three in that list. But Like I said Id rather see them first in hand or some REALLY GOOD PICTURES.

I've noticed that as of late most newly certified notes at the big shows and in auction listings are using either PCGS or PMG (the currency branch of NGC) graded notes. I would guess that this is in part due to the reputation of those two companies' coin grading divisions. Prior to that, one most often saw CGA certified notes.
I have seen a couple other services too. CGC and RCGS both show up, though by far the big three are PCGS, PMG and CGA.

There has been much discussion, flaming and heated debate on other forums regarding the relative accuracy of those big three services.

As always, no matter who's holder a note is in....Grade the note, not the holder.

There is an excellent excellent illustrated book on grading standards for US paper money by Herbert J Kwart; "United States Paper Money Grading Standards." - Five Seasons Publishers
