My son travled to Japan 2 years ago and got me the 500 coin - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/japan-1000-yen-nippon-ginko-coins.305053/
My family and I go every 2 years. Will be there next year to check out the new coins Arigatogazaimas!
I haven't seen any Reiwa (令和) coins for sale yet. I see plenty of over-priced Heisei 31 (平成三一年 or 平成31年) coins selling on Ebay, but no Reiwa. Are the Reiwa coins available anywhere yet?
I'm sure I'll get some! The zeros are cool...and part of the security features for the 'new' 500 yen. http://www.starcityhomer.com/500-yen.html
Just read an article - all Reiwa coins should be out by October. I really want one of the 500 yen that commemorate his enthronement. But that’s not for a while.
The new 500 yen coin will be bi-metal in a couple year's time - I wonder if there will be further security enhancement.
There is currently a 2019(year 31) Heisei 500 yen, commemorating the 30th anniversary of enthronement. It's bimetallic. They are for normal circulation, but you never see them, except in coin shops. You can find these in Japan for 800 - 1000 yen.
