In my searches for Morgan toners I have come across some interesting finds. This thread will help document some of these. If, like me, you have ever wondered where some of the 67-68 graded Morgans come from, it could be from a lower graded holder. Did some of these deserve the bump? I won't rule it out. Have some pushed the boundaries? I think so.
Well, hey, if you resubmit it and tell them to reholder only if it upgrades, it's got nowhere to go but up. And if there's only a 10% chance of passing as a higher grade, well, that just means they'll get that many more submission fees...
All very nice looking Morgans. Probably deserving of the grade but IMO I do feel they get a bump because of the toning.
Fun thread. I like how 80% of them CAC’d at the lower grade. “Solid for the grade at 65+, solid for the grade at 67+, now 68”... give me a break. This just reminds me of a casino floor; don’t forget the house always wins!
This is a great thread. I wish you could post it on the CU forums, but it would probably be deleted in about ten minutes.
Too bad Laura Sperber/Legend successfully lobbied to kill off the Coin Facts archive. I watched the 1904-O from the Northern Lights Collection that fetched $30k+ move up from MS64 to MS65 before ending up in the MS67 CAC holder that it resided in when it sold at Legend Auctions. That was an eye opening experience to me and the point that marked the beginning of the end of the hobby for me as a collector. I will buy for resale if I have a client lined up for it (or can within a short period of time), but I no longer buy as a collector for a long term hold.
Although it's not a Morgan, these are hardly the most egregious examples I have seen. Look at the 1938-S PCGS MS68+ FB CAC Mercury Dime that recently fetched $370,000 at Legend Auctions. Posters on the CU Forums found it in a PCGS MS67+ CAC holder and a NGC MS67* FB holder in the past.
Here's a link for that dime:https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...or-july-8-2019-a-364-250--dollars-1938-s-dime
One of the reasons I am teaching myself to grade MS coins. Don't have to take the tpg grade as gospel and can see if the coin is potentially 'worth' of a higher market grade.
I’m certain it would be poofed pretty quickly. Was that Mercury Dime thread poofed? I read the first few replies but never went back to it and can’t find it now. That case also reminds me of the $100k Franklin. There were no pictures, but several people commented that they saw or had the coin in a 66/66+ holder before it went to auction as a 67+
I misunderstood the point of this thread but on looking at it again I think @kSigSteve hit the nail on the head. It's a joke.
What I find particularly interesting is that these are all relatively new slabs (I believe the oldest are still post 2010) and many of the sales in the upgraded holders happened less than a year after the coin sold in the original holder.
Yeah I know. I don’t see any beans on the upgrade. And I guarantee they were sent there. I highly doubt high end coins like this don’t go
The 65+ was rebeaned as a 67+ (I don’t know if AB sent it in when it made 68). The NGC 66 wasn’t beaned and still upgraded to PCGS 67+ The other three may or may not have been sent in.
Sadly it looks like the thread is gone along with a companion thread, which is truly a shame. Laura continued with her jealousy and trashing of D.L. Hansen who has never done anything to her or said anything untoward to her that anyone can ever identify. I wish PCGS had left the thread because she showed her true colors. It also showed how stupid she is (and sidekick as well). You don't attack the rich guy that wins two coins from your auction house at multiple times of guide for overpaying or strongly imply that he is a fool or can lap up your crumbs as if she (and her clients) are above him.
