Most of the common FEL TEMP REPARATIO AE coins are of one of five types: soldier-spearing-fallen-horseman, hut, galley, phoenix, or emperor and two captives. There is another type, much less common, emperor and one captive, only from Thessalonica. This seventh type is the rarest copper FEL TEMP REPARATIO type: 21 mm. 3.80 grams. Bust left, draped and cuirassed, globe in left hand, laurel wreath and rosette diadem. N in right field. Emperor, nimbate, riding right, spearing, two kneeling foes This type is only from Rome, with two varieties of mint marks, one with a dot between the letters (like "R•T", with pearl-diadem, RIC Rome 184) and one like this one "RE" (RIC Rome 154). Of interest is the the horseman is nimbate (i.e. with halo). Show us a rare FTR coin!
I don't have one Warren. I have a number of the garden variety types, a phoenix, but that's it. This one is really cool!
I have been looking for an FTR like the OP for years. And yours is in beautiful condition, too. Congratulations on a neat score. Where'd you get it?
I saw, I liked, I bid too low. The long wait continues..... I am glad it went to someone I know though.
I just hope to complete a mint set of this eventually. I recently got one from Thessaloniki from @gsimonel
Really nice example, @Valentinian. Officina epsilon from the Rome mint, with Constantius wearing a rosette diadem. It always seems odd to me that for the six officinae at Rome when these were produced 348-350, the first, third, and fourth used the initials for Roman cardinals (P, T, Q) . The second, fifth, and sixth used Greek numerals (Beta, Epsilon, Zeta ~ final Sigma). Not sure what that was about. This type for the second series is only known for the first, third, and fifth officinae. Here's one I picked up from CNG in 2016; RIC VIII 153, officina P (rima) wearing a pearl diadem. Between us we've got them covered for the second series (Obverse N behind bust, reverse N left, plain exergue). We'll keep an eye out for the later series with the dot between the exergual letters. That later series is only known from 3 officinae, but the last is shifted from Epsilon to Quarta. I like yours better. Rosette's are jazzier than pearls.
Hey everyone. Nice coins! I was introduced to collecting ancients with two varieties of the FEL TEMP coins. I've always been a fan of the falling horseman type. I'm hoping someone could help with an ID on this one? I've had it for a few years and I've never been able to determine the mint!
Looks to me to be one of the following: SMHS = Heraclea SMKS = Cyzicus SMNS = Nicomedia I’m not sure if they all had officina “S” in operation. I’m commenting from my phone and can not check... so you’ll need to verify that but the mint mark is SM(H,K, orN)S most likely. Looks to be SMKS to me. ...Constantius II.
