Some here would offer .04 cents, but I'd say MAYBE you just DID pay for your metal detector...

    Nice find @New Windsor Bill

I do not own a metal detector.....yet. However, I've been doing a lot of research on detector forums. The beginner recommendations I've been receiving are the following (in no specific order):

    Minelab Equinox 800
    Minelab Equinox 600
    Garrett AT Pro

NW Bill, do you have any knowledge and opinions of these MD's?

Those are all very good metal detectors to start with. A better detector can find deeper coins or be able to pick up good signals when there is a lot of iron or other junk masking those good signals. That is why I mentioned those better machines. A good place to see some great video's of a lot of different metal detectors being tested is you tube. Look up scannerguy1968 , he has a test garden that he does extensive testing with and you will learn a lot. In my area where I live there are very old areas but they have been well searched through the years or they are littered with tons of bottle caps, pulltabs etc. So in my situation I had to invest in a detector that could go deeper and be able to unmask those good signals that are basically unreadable. Hope this helps

My understanding of the Equinox 800 is that it does offer excellent discrimination with digital/numerical distinction, good depth, waterproof (shallow) and affordable. Let me reiterate, I do not own any MD, yet. This is just through reading, and talking to other 'swingers'.

FYI, we're in the same area, if you're in New Windsor, NY. I'm across the county near Warwick.

Hello, if you just wan't an average detector by all means buy that one. I have had many different detectors and I guarantee that if you are looking for depth that most detectors cannot go to and high speed recovery amongst all the trash and believe me there is plenty of trash, do some more research. From my experience this is my advice.
