    Hello forum,

I was wondering how many known variations there are on the mintmark for 1923 S quarters? I recently picked up a raw xf from a local dealer (I can return it if a problem) and I want a little more info as the mintmark on most that I have seen online appears to have a larger curve on the top of the S (inverted?) where the S on mine appears to be more symmetrical and “right side up” as you would think the normal orientation of an S should appear. Are there any other diagnostics of genuine 23 S quarters? Any websites I can visit for additional info? Thanks in advanced. I have attached a pic of the coin.

    Eric

1928 is the only year with two different mint mark sizes (large and small S). Other years only look like yours (small S).

I looked at several on Heritage. The location of this mint mark seems right, but I'm not totally sure about the size. The ones on Heritage appear slightly taller. Also the 23-S is notorious for a very weak date: this one is pretty well-detailed compared to most. See if he'll guarantee it will slab as authentic.

I have a 23s and mine don't look no where like that one you have. It looks like somebody took a hammer and flatten the 1923 and it also looks like it was a number under the 1923 ( Dlb Die almost ) Take it back and get your money. ( IJS )

Google 1923 s quarter. There are several to look at. Also, about 60 on eBay. To me, it appears there are different shaped mint marks. Many are slabbed.

What drew me to it is the nice bold date. Ive passed on quite a few with weak dates and this one seemed way better than most Ive seen. Here are pics of the front/back. I should probably send this one in to be graded.

I would definitely have it certified by either NGC or PCGS. If it is genuine, then send it to CAC, as it should almost certainly qualify for a "green bean." Very sharp date, particularly on a well-worn piece.

Large S is easy to tell. Yours is not a latge S

It looks funny to me as well. Almost as if someone took a file to it.

Is the date of standing liberty quarters the highest point on the coin?

    For 1916-24, pretty much.
