1914-D...real? Or Not?

In my opinion there looks to be something funny with the mintmark. It looks to be crooked and not the shape of a "D" on a genuine 14-D Lincoln. I'm not aware of any various styles of mintmarks during this date.....does anyone know of any? I've always known of a genuine 14-D to have a shape of a small triangle inside the "D". I'd say its not real. I believe I'd stay away from this one.

B in liberty is low on both
and W in we is a little crooked, but besides that i dunno, i am no expert.

I'll say no. D doesn't look right, and for some reason the reverse doesn't look right either if that makes sense. You think it is cast Jack?

I dont see why the D being slightly crooked is such a big deal...

anyways, I do see a resemblance, it has this somewhat porous look to it, like the other you showed...

 

It's not genuine

Look at the oddball lettering, LIBERTY being the worst, and the bubbly surface, it's probably an electrotype. Yes, the D is way off as well.

 

The R in Liberty doesn't look right as well.

 

As soon as I seen the auction, I thought of that thread.

 

Seller told me it has been in the family since 1965 and they did not have fakes back then, go stick my head in the sand, lol.

The lettering looks too good to compare to your fakes. I suspect that it is real, but with problems. The specs I am seeing I suspect are corrosion and

probably means that it has been cleaned.

 

Study it some more...I'll bet you a dollar, lol

 

That "R" looks exactly like mine - CERTIFIED. I still think it is real with corrosion (electrolysis from being in water).

 

If I'm wrong, it certainly wont be the first time....I hope either CaveTroll, Mark Feld or GDJMSP pokes around here as well. I do not like the obverse lettering or the D at all. Hmmmmmm, it's a head scratcher.

 

It definitely looks fake to me. It just has that fuzzy look that many fakes have.

 

The roughness on you 22- is due to depressions where the metal did not fill completely. The bumps on the 14-D are bumps (raised). When I blow it up, all of the letters are straight save the corrosion (which I can tell it is corrosion). The "D" looks like the "D" is supposed to look factoring in the nick on it top. Comparing the letters in "LIBERTY":
R = fat left leg on both (mine and the pic)
T = bulbous leg on both
Y = fatter left arm than right on both

And Shortgapbob, it looks fuzzy because it is. It is corroded and has electrolysis. Both then to change the shape of things.

 

I am not a collector of cent coins so I am NO expert. But after copying the obverse and rotating it upright and then enlarging it and cutting out the areas pictured below, it sure looks strange to me. The original photo appears not taken at a true perpendicular angle to the coin so there should be some anomalies due to that but... Definitely looks strange.

incorrect mm shape with a CCW lean to it more than any 14-D I have ever seen, BUT, I could be wrong. I do lend credence to Rlm's opinion greatly.

 

Kinda looks like this one to me
