The 1863 is one of the "thick, white cents" from the Civil War era. This one graded MS-64, shows the color of the coin when it was new. I looked a couple of other dates from this era at a recent show, and they were toned. It's fun to find one that looks like this. People called these coins "nickels" before the copper-nickel five cent piece was introduced in 1866.
