Hello, I have an 1860'S 5 cent piece that I have recovered while metal detecting. The date is not 100% clear. What are your opinions and also if it is worth more than a nickle? DSCN0462.JPG DSCN0463.JPG DSCN0463.JPG

Not sure of the value, but it sure looks like an 1868 to me...

If they were made in 1866 that is what the year looks like to me , not sure though if those were made that year , and if not it has to be an 1868 .

That is exactly what I thought, but the 1866 also had rays between stars and that was for 2 years and was variety 1 ,1866 and 1867. In 1867 variety 2 this was used up until 1883.

It looks to be is fairly nice condition , and that was a great find. I would go back to the same place and hunt for more. Good Luck on your next outing. Dillan

Thank you Dillan. I am located in an area that has some very old areas to search but they are well hunted. So I went a little nuts are purchased some of the best detectors in order to have a chance at finding old coins. I have gone out with others that have recovered half dimes and Spanish reales right in front of me and for that reason I know there has got to be more. I will keep trying and try to find some more productive area's.

Nice coin.... 1868...... Where ever you found this you should do more detecting there because there could be rarer items in this location.

I live for these old coins. You can buy them all day long but when you recover them out of the ground its exciting.

Say Bill What type of detector do you recommend for a person starting out . I want one that is going to find things not only what is 6 inches under the top. I have a cheap detector , first time out I found an old silver spoon . The second time just can lids wire various metals . I have a setting to look for different metals although I feel the detector is something you might buy for a kid starting out. Do you have any advise . Any would be appreciated , thank you . Dillan, if you wan't a very deep detector for not a lot of money, I would recommend the Tesoro Tejon. I have found coins as deep as 15" down where most detectors struggle to go past 8 inches. The reasons I am suggesting this one is #1 the price. They cost $600. USD new and it comes with a lifetime warranty, it is also a very lightweight well built detector.. If you want a high end deeper detector that can easily find a nickle at 18 inches plus I would recommend the Garrett ATX. This is a Pulse detector that gives two types of signals. A high tone and a low tone for ferrous and non ferrous. This machine will set you back around $2500. USD. But the Garrett is better where there is not a lot of junk because you will find every bit of ferrous and non ferrous in the ground. If you want a good all around detector but not as deep as the Tejon but the best for trashy areas, the XP DEUS at a cost of $1500., or the Minelab CTX 3030 at a cost of $2500. Another excellent detector not as deep as the Tejon but loaded with a lot of nice programs is the Whites V3i. It has excellent discrimination as well. And the reason I recommend this one is that it is a $1200. plus detector that you can find used for a good bargain around $700. You see a lot of people do not like all the features that the White offers, they jusy want a turn on and go detector, so they end up taking a loss on them. I have all of these detectors and from my experience this I my recommendations. Hope this helps. Bill

Best of luck to you. You can go in the water up to 10 feet with that detector, congrats.

Thank you very much for all the information , that really helps a metal detector wanna be . I have a cheap Garrett but find it not that good for what I would like to do. I appreciate you taking the time to give me all that info . I will re read it a few times and write down the names and see what ones I can get close to here or will order online. Thanks . I am hoping the detector will not only find me some interesting items but get out to many more places that I am wanting to go to . Another hobby that does not need a hefty investment like a new boat.
