Not a new acquisition, but I wanted to showcase this "black beauty" again since I got it under the Canon last night. @lordmarcovan graciously sold this to me at his cost. Whatcha think, @CircCam?
I think this little gem was an appropriate purchase on the 4th of July Happy Independence Day to all of you!
I received the coin and took this photo of the reverse. It look much different with different lighting. But the apparent change of the uprights to dentils did surprise me. I now believe this is Reverse M (S-38), which I had ruled out based on the earlier photos.
My first ones from @lordmarcovan 's eclectic box..... United States: gold quarter-eagle ($2.50), 1843-O, Small Date variety, New Orleans mint XF40. and Japan (Meiji Era): silver and gold Nibu-Kin (2 bu), undated, ca. 1868-1869 AU55. Both of these are new types also for me. I have very little gold in coins, but it is nice to get some in hand.
This was the nicest example I was able to locate in the assigned grade after many months of active searching. Paid far over book, and I’m talking PCGS book… Fierce bidding. Hoping to receive this week. Legend/Regency #33 Auction. A Great Collections, more “yellow” CAC, in same grade, was on the block during this same time period and sold for much less. 1911-D $2.50 PCGS AU55 (Strong D) CAC PCGS Photo: Edited Photo:
New pick up. Looks like the someone gave the reverse die some love at 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock. Do you guys think that's post mint damage or a some sort of die damage?
Exceptional coins command exceptional prices. You, the grader, have to make the decision to purchase an exceptional coin.....and the premium associated with it. Beautiful coin, Bob.
