Sorry, but yes it's another Domitian. I sort of forgotten about this coin and it sat on the back burner for a few weeks. It deserves better treatment. Domitian Æ As, 10.56g Rome mint, 82 AD RIC 110 (C3). BMC 281. Obv: IMP CAES DIVI VESP F DOMITIAN AVG P M; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: TR P COS VIII DES VIIII P P; S C in field; Minerva adv. r., with spear and shield Acquired from Holding History, eBay, June 2019. Early in Domitian's reign Minerva figured prominently on the aes coinage. This As from early 82 featuring his patron deity with spear and shield would later be adopted by the denarius issues after the overhaul of the mint later in the year. It would become one of the standard four Minerva types for that denomination. The dark olive green patina is quite pretty in hand. I would ask you guys to post your Domitians (LOL!) ... instead feel free to post your coins with fetching patinas or toning.
I have no particular love for the coinage of Domitian but for my first book I chose this coin's obv for the cover. It belongs (belonged?) to Curtis Clay as I was completing a marathon session to photograph his huge collection. This was back in 2004 when I had my first reasonably "pro" camera; a Nikon D100 with a pre-Internet-age 60mm Nikkor lens. A combo like this would probably cost fifty bucks today. While not perfect, the quality and resolution of this photo is still impressive considering the primitive equipment. It would (imo) be serviceable enough to be reprinted as is in an auction today. My one and only Dom's nothing special: Rasiel
I just assumed with the recent deluge of Domitians folks were nearing their upper tolerance level for him.
My bronze Domitian with Minerva reverse. I find these to be rather scarce especially considering this emperor's predilection for the goddess Minerva. Also , his Virtus and Fides.
Very nice new Flavian AE, David! This one, my only imperial Domitian, is a dark green, pleasing in hand, but it fairly rough or patchy. Domitian, Ruled 81-96 AD AE Dupondius, Struck 87 AD, Rome Mint Obverse: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XIII CENS PER P P, Head of Domitian, radiate, right. Reverse: VIRTVTI AVGVSTI, Virtus standing right, resting foot on helmet, holding spear and parazonium, S-C across field. References: RIC II 540
