Hey, I’m new to this but just came across this and it made me wonder. This could be perfectly normal, but I wanted to be sure. I came across a 1982 P quarter, and it looks like the P has been filled in. If I’m not mistaken, the P mint marks usually have a discernible dip in the center of the P, but I don’t see it here. Any help is appreciated.
Lets just say its not abnormal for a die chip by mintmarks, problem is its all to common and adds no value. especially if the coin is worn. welcome to CT
Very good eye. Unfortunately this is common so it adds no value. The obverse Die developed a chip so the P filled in. It's also worn due to circulation. Welcome to CT.
Welcome to the neighborhood! There are two ways that this can occur, but neither of them add any value to the coin. 1) The post on the die that forms the center of the "P" breaks off, and coin metal flows into the void during the minting process. 2) The center of the "P" is very small, and it doesn't take much for the surrounding metal to become smashed and fill it while in circulation.
