I recently looked into buying some silver eagle proofs for my two sons' birthdates: 1992 & 1996. I was suprised to learn that the 1996 is valued at almost 3 times that of the older 1992 coin. I looked at the mintage numbers provided by the US Mint and there was only about a 20,000 difference (something like 490K vs 470K). What happened in 1996 to make these coins worth more?
First off, Hi and welcome. Silver Eagles are one of my favorites. May I ask where you are getting your prices from. I didn't think they were that far apart.
Idhair, Mostly from Ebay. However, I did go to Barnes & Noble last night and looked at the 2008 Red Book. If I recall correctly, they had them listed at $40 for the 1992 and $65 for the 1996. These are of course the proof prices and I don't think they take "box & COA" into account. The 1992's, with box & COA, are going for approx $35 on Ebay, but the 1996's are $80+. Robert
It is becasue of the 10th Anniversary of the coin. A coin show might give you a better price. Good luck And welcome. The uncirculated ASE is going for about the same.
WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Be carefull of what you use for a price of any coin. The Red Book is notorious for outdated and inacurate prices. The PCGS web site also has a price guide for coins and that too is a little wierd. There are magazines, books, web sites with price guides and you would find most are a little different. What they are selling for on ebay is a decent way to find out and a little on the most up to date prices but also be aware of those prices.
