I’ve been searching rolls for fun and found this interesting quarter. It seems to have a line going through Washington’s forehead and all the way down to the other side of the mint Mark. Looks kind of like the mark on a speared buffalo nickel. Did I find my first error coin?
Also found this gouge on a 1997 p eagles wing. I assume it is after mint damage. But I wanted to make sure. The other coin is the quarter I asked about above.
Ok. That’s disappointing. How do you tell the difference in a PMD scratch and a die flaw.? To me it looks just like the mark on a speared bullalo nickel
i see spots where the "line" skipped, like where his forehead meets the field, the folds in his hair, in the field by the mint mark, a die crack wont skip, also notice how in spots it reflects the light, like most metal objects, if you scratch it, it will be shinier underneath, and of course it looks like many other scratches i've seen, but does not look like a die crack, which is what the speared bison is..
A scratch or gouge on the surface of a die would leave a raised mark on the coin. A scratch or gouge on a coin would leave a recess on the surface with raised metal along the edge (crater effect). Chris
Thank you all. I believe you are right and I appreciate you taking the time to educate me since I am a Newbie at this. Just for fun I tried to get a better shot of the line!
Very clear now. You would be wise to flatten all your staples on the 2 x 2 holders! I bet one just like that one showing on another coin holder caused that scratch. Pretty soon ALL your coins will have staple scratches....
