I've been interested in finding a reason to stop tossing pennies to the... Well, anywhere but in my pocket. So lately I've been looking more closely at them instead of just old silver. I found some chatter about the 1982 D Lincoln memorial penny recently and took interest as that's the year that I was hatched (though technically I suppose the egg cracked in 81, but I crawled out in 82 ) So I have these two and I think one of them might just about be a wonderful find, but more likely a couple of near misses. Can anybody clarify this conundrum for me? Thanks
Large date copper is 3.1 g and small date zinc is 2.5. You want the small date copper (so does everyone else though). Keep looking!
That's what I was thinking. Any idea what that phantom limb under the small date zinc's 9 is about? And did they change the font set with the minting change from small to large date? The reverse usoa heading looks different to my eye and I'm pretty sure the copper LD is a wide AM?
Looks like a copper plating "blister" on the zinc one. Yes the date is different especially noticible on the 2. Wide AM is the norm.
zinc rot on the Phantom limb is what it looks like, I read there was like 26 1982 varieties it is a wide am
Welcome to Coin Talk. That "phantom limb" you're referring to is probably a plating blister http://www.error-ref.com/blisteredplating/
Looks like three of us hit the reply button at the same time. lol I take that back. @Razz beat us to it.
Yeah that penny is in rough shape and the images appear MUCH larger on the form than they did on my phone so now I'm really picking them apart
Welcome to CT. I have the 7 common ones, I really haven't inspected them other than the common, im going to take them back out tomorrow and do a better inspection, too late rite now.
Thanks Thomas, that's a very useful link for a newcomer. And thanks to everyone for the quick and informative replies! Hooray for the internet doing more than just giving Facebook a place to infest
I could not wait, not trying to steal your thunder. my eyes are tired. cant see too good. bad pictures nevermind.
I got my 7 at the swap meet for 2 bucks. It yielded this beauty: a copper large date "Woody". It is a slightly mis-align die (MAD) strike (wider rim at the bottom than at the top on the obverse).
Yes I have seen these sets since I picked this one up and they all have that same spot empty. I didn't even need to weigh the small date D zinc as you could see the plating blisters...
No, but when you post, take pictures, and start your own thread for best results, its considered disrespectful, to hijack another thread. 72 without mintmark means it was produced in philly, but condition and pictures are the only way to determine if you have something worth more examination.
